The Secret in the Basement, by Nick Smith

From the ordinary to the extraordinary, a discovery in the basement of a new house Richard's family moves to changes his life forever. Frequent dreams featuring six mysterious, lit symbols on a stone wall in a dark corridor have him baffled. One day, the secret is revealed and Richard finds himself with a tough new task of restoring peace while fighting hordes of monsters. Being the friendliest high school kid in town, he is easy to get along with and makes plenty of friends, but he must cope with several bullies, family life, and a new-found fear. What will become of Richard and what do the symbols and his dreams mean?

This story is written as if one were playing a role-playing game, choosing "new game" from the title screen and using a script-like format. Everything enjoyed in RPGs is included, from damage popups and elaborate mechanics behind stats and equipment to deep character development and exploration, including gathering information in towns and side quests.

and much like his website

The Secret in the Basement is the sophomore offering from Nick Smith, known more widely on the internet as Ulillillia, who is known for his introspective-panopticon of a website at http://ulillillia.us/, Platform Masters, a platforming PC game that has been in development for years, and his affinities for pizza and grinding out levels in JRPGs. This book focuses mainly on that last point - this book is about Richard, a character who spends time defeating enemies to level up and get money to buy upgrades for his character. The book takes place in two worlds - the world of the being, that is, Richard's family, home and school life, and the world of the becoming - a world where Richard can fight enemies, gain experience, upgrade his equipment and stats, and act as a hero.

However, unintentional or not, this seems to be a book about Nick Smith himself - anyone who's been following the exploits of Ulillillia over the last few years will recognize the similarity of Richard's life to what Uli has referred to as his "mind game" - a world where he assumes the role of a character in a video game, who can glide, levitate, run at incredible speeds, jump to enormous heights, and manipulate the world as he sees fit. Where the book deviates from the autobiographical is the fact that Richard can take the experience that he gained in the RPG world and use it in real life - Richard uses these powers to reform bullies, fight crime and even defeat strange beings that invade our own world. Richard's use of these powers in life seems to reflect what is possibly a years-old fantasy of the author, and much like his website, provides more insight in to the mind of Nick Smith, who has long had a habit of putting himself on display not as a spectacle but as a fellow human reaching out in the best way he knows how to do.

The book, like its predecessor The Legend of the Ten Elemental Masters, is written in an unconventional style - the action is present tense, the dialogue is written like a movie script, and the main conflicts of the story take place on the field of menu-based classic JRPG combat (think Final Fantasy 3/6, Chrono Trigger, etc). Characters hit one another with spells or physical attacks and the book keeps track of the hitpoint damage that the characters do to one another. Unlike Ten Elemental Masters, though, Richard starts the story at the power level of the average human and must grind his way up to the level of a demigod. While he never reaches the level of Knuckles, the main character of Ten Elemental Masters, he is still a force to be reckoned with even a quarter of the way through the book. In this way, this book is a more mature offering than Ten Elemental Masters. While Ten Elemental Masters had Knuckles sweeping away any and all foes with the flick of a wrist, Richard has some work to do and developments and discoveries to make about himself along the way.

Nick Smith, being somewhat of an internet celebrity (and some would say sideshow attraction, although I think he is worth much more than that), has attracted his fair share of ironic enjoyment, and indeed you can see that many of the reviews on Ten Elemental Masters are facetious in nature. However, there is one review that states "There is absolutely no book like this in the entire world." The same is true of Secret in the Basement. This is an absolutely one-of-a-kind offering from a person whose mold was broken after he was made, and if you are someone who enjoys the kind of world that Nick Smith brings you to when you read his website, his Facebook, or watch his videos, then I'd recommend giving this book a chance to get an even deeper view of how he works.

This book is not for everybody. This book is not even for the vast majority of people. I would wager that most of the purchasers of this book are people who have appreciated Nick Smith throughout the years and would like to support him in any way possible, and are not planning on reading the book. I believe that buying this book for that reason is a noble pursuit, and I would encourage anyone who would like to support Nick Smith's unique brand of living to do so. Those who choose to take the plunge and read it, though, will be treated to something they most likely have never seen before. This book is fun, sometimes hilarious, sometimes dull, sometimes sublime, and mainly a deep examination of a personality that we have never seen before, and may never see again. For me, this book is a 5/5.
