Daughter loved it!

I wanted to get a beginner's chapter book for my almost 6-year-old daughter. I thought about Junie B. Jones or the Magic Tree House series, but I was turned off by Junie's poor grammar (or at least the author's attempt to make her sound like a "real" 6-year-old), and by the Magic Tree House's female character being "dreamy" while her brother was "logical". This book managed to avoid those caveats, while still being an entertaining read for my daughter. I wasn't sure at first if she could follow a chapter book on her own, with illustrations only appearing every 3 pages or so, so I read her the first two chapters last night. This morning, the first thing she reached for was that book. Instead of getting up and watching Saturday morning cartoons, she sat in bed, ate a banana, and finished her new book. I couldn't ask for anything better.

About the Author
For the past two decades, Cecie Starr has been known as one of the best-selling biology textbook authors. Her texts, appreciated for their clarity in both the written word and the visual representation of biological concepts, include multiple editions of BIOLOGY: THE UNITY AND DIVERSITY OF LIFE, BIOLOGY: CONCEPTS AND APPLICATIONS, and BIOLOGY TODAY AND TOMORROW. Her original dream was to become an architect. Instead of building houses, she now builds, with care and attention to detail, incredible texts based on this philosophy: "I invite students into a chapter through an intriguing story. Once inside, they get the great windows that biologists construct on the world of life. Biology is not just another house. It is a conceptual mansion. I hope to do it justice."

Christine Evers has been creating multimedia and Web-based materials to supplement Starr and other science texts for ten years. She earned her B.S. in Biology from SUNY Stony Brook. After working as a research assistant studying the developmental biology of slime mold, she was awarded an N.S.F. fellowship to attend Yale, where she studied evolutionary biology and honeybee behavior. She has a strong interest in science education and serves as a member of her local school board.

Lisa Starr earned her B.A. in Chemistry/Biochemistry from the University of California at San Diego Revelle College in 1982. Over the next five years, she became expert in molecular and cell biology as she helped build a veterinary virology research program at the startup biotech firm Syntro (which was later spun off into Protein Polymer Technologies). During this time, Lisa invented the cDNA cloning kit and the mRNA isolation kit that launched Invitrogen (now part of Life Technologies). She left Syntro to launch a molecular biology division for a veterinary vaccine company (Synbiotics, later acquired by Pfizer Animal Health), and then spent seven years at The Scripps Research Institute investigating integrin isoform expression in development and cancer metastasis and training postdoctoral candidates. She was recruited to start up the biotech firm Ixsys/Applied Molecular Evolution (later acquired by Lilly) and to establish proof-of-concept for combinatorial library construction as well as antibody randomization/humanization at the fledgling firm. Prior to joining the Starr franchise, she was recruited to start up Desmos, another biotech firm, that was later spun off into Cythera/Novocell/ViaCyte. Since 1997, Lisa has been responsible for the incredible art in the Starr biology textbooks, and began authoring the books in 2004.

would recommend to anyone in biology 101

Came at a very reasonable price in comparison to what my school store was asking for, and with the renting option I saved even more. Though my class in particular never used it in class, it came very much in handy when I wanted to study for a test. After every chapter there's a 14-16 question quiz with answers in the index. Very helpful, would recommend to anyone in biology 101.

Excellent conceptualization of "Europe"

Balibar provides a lot of food for thought with this book. The first four chapters set up the theoretical framework for his argument, focused primarily around what he terms "European apartheid." I find fascinating his discussion of an apartheid-type exclusion that is being implemented right now not only in the European legislation, but also in the way "Europe" is being constructed as a concept. One of the most interesting ideas discussed in relation to "European apartheid" is probably that of the all-inclusive community. It is difficult to envision a society without borders, yet Balibar at least tries to make us think that it might be possible.

The author raises a variety of other interesting issues, including an original approach to nationalism, citizenship, immigration, even the role of communism in the formation of contemporary Europe, and others. All of this is even more exciting when you realize that he is trying to conceptualize a completely new entity (the EU) that is still in the making. So, what will become of Europe - will it be just a big nation-state, a new type of federation, or something else? Balibar doesn't know, but he certainly makes his readers consider some options.

Warning: this is a serious philosophical book that deals with complex context-specific concepts. If you know nothing about nationalism, exclusion, or the European Union, start elsewhere and come back to Balibar when you are ready for the red pill. The book is also very dense - every word counts, and it takes forever to get through, but it is well worth the struggle.

It is a very useful resource for interpreting the Bible's deeper meaning, because when the meaning of a name is known, it can usually be seen to relate to the context in which it is found.

From Aaron (meaning "light-bringer") to Zuriel (meaning "my rock is God"), A Dictionary of Scripture Proper Names leaves no proper noun undefined. Especially recommended for Biblical Studies reference collections and reading lists, A Dictionary Of Scripture Proper Names functions as an excellent quick reference, and may also serve to assist anyone looking for appropriate-sounding scriptural names.

A near & handy little book!

The seller was on the spot w/ shipping the order to me (luckily we are both from the same state) and I had this nifty little book in no time. This is a terrific resource for those of us who want to dig a little deeper in to the meaning behind Biblical names. I've always felt the Bible was a very deep, multi-layered book and the more I read the more I'm just amazed at this wonderful Book the Holy Spirit has revealed to us thru the ages. The meaning behind the names, places, etc put things in a whole new light. For the serious student, take the Jewish roots approach and things will become much clearer & richer as the customs, meanings, etc just come to life!
