About the Author

Ian Stewart is a monthly contributor to the highly popular "Recreational Mathematics" column in Scientific American. Professor of Mathematics and Director of the Mathematics Awareness Centre at Warwick University, he is both an active research mathematician and a well-known popularizer of mathematics and related areas of science. In 1995 he was awarded the Michael Faraday Award for furthering the public understanding of science. A Fellow of the Royal Society, his many books include Flatterland and The Magical Maze.

Buyable Book - but poor quality of binding

've been looking forward to this book - which was delayed by almost a year after it was announced and am bit disappointed with the content - not as entertaining with his "recreational maths " as Ian Stewart's previous books like Maths hysteria as the topics are more physics and less recreational maths etc

Stewart covers mathematics of time travel, explores the shape of teardrops (physics ?) ,strategies for the game of Hex, and the title "Where Are the Cows?" maze, which changes every time you pass through it. He also covers on how to count magic squares, describes the mathematical patterns in animal movement (with a story more about Tarzan and Jane than the actual problem ) and the physics of sand piles etc though all embellished with wit , humour and delightful cartoons.

Another gripe is on the quality of binding as the book has come apart within 4-5 days and also why has the book size has been reduced from the earlier comfortable standard 9 x 6 to 7 x 5 as in math hysteria and How to cut a cake . Most inconvenient.

Good but not Stewart's best

21 chapters of mathematical recreation. Usually I find the professors books rather entertaining, but I must say I'm feeling a bit disappointed about this volume.

It's off to a good start with "the Lore and Lure of Dice" - the context specific reflection on the question of probability, and the non-transitive dice. Then quickly passing Piet Hein's board game Hex.

Why we're introduced to Tarzan and Jane in the midst of an otherwise interesting subject, "Walking with quadropeds" - the patterns of the gaits of four legged animals, I have no idea.

Chapters 7, 8, and 9 touches upon time travel, which - as I recall it - is much more physics and sci-fi than mathematics. Luckily though chapter 10 serves a nice gem - Cone with a Twist - the sphericon.

Chapter 11 touches upon the shape of a drop, and in chapter 12 we're back to probability and fallacies in The Interrogator's Fallacy, where we now use Bayes' theorem and Mathews's formula. There's an error in the formula printed on page 173 at the top though, it should be:
P(A|C) = P(C|A) * P (A)/ P(C)

Then we get to the title chapter: Cows in the Maze. And while it has cows and is kind of a maze - it's not a standard maze, it's a maze of logic statements.

Leaving the maze on a Knight's Tour into Cat's Cradle over Klein bottles (and M�bius bands) into Vorono� celled craters into knots, which again I found a bit disappointing.

The construction of Most Perfect Squares are matched up with Mathematical impossibilities.

The final chapter of the book regards dancing with strings forming regular solids.

VERY SPECIAL BOOK

I love Sylvia Browne and every one of her books. She is an awesome person who has much knowledge and wisdom about Mother and Father God, Angels, Spirit Guides, etc. If you are open to life and the world around you you can't help but love the books Sylvia writes. They are filled with so much love, wonder, fact, research, enlightenment, etc. She is truly a wonderful person who has opened up a whole new world to me. My life has changed drastically for the better. This book will enlighten you and prove to you there is a Mother God and she is awesome. Open up to her and let her in and awesome things will start to happen to you in your life. Who couldn't use more enlightenment, love and miracles in their life? Get this book and read it. I got it on Thursday night and had it read by Friday afternoon the next day. I couldn't put it down. It is filled with so much wonderful information, love, enlightenment and wonderful stories by real life people. It is a book that only God could have written through Slyvia of course. Having studied all aspects of all spiritual paths,religions,dogmas,etc..I found it to be a great refresher!This book should be titled for beginners seeking truth in an all loving God/Goddess-FEMALE/MALE.For God/Goddess is all loving.
Once again the incomparable controversial Sylvia Browne shares her light with the uninformed-I LOVE IT!You will learn many paths & Traditions that you may never have heard of,if your new to seeking truth in God/Goddess.I especially love how Sylvia shoots straight from the hip and offers such wonderful insights with references/weblinks to seek out what she puts forth.A really great read and an easy one to understand.I Love you Sylvia.
Stay the way you are and keep sharing your knowledge and wisdom with the world for you are an emmisary of Love,Light and Truth.

Interesting. This book has answered some of the questions I have long had about the maleness of God in so many teachings when there are quite definitely two sexes here. Something was always lacking, and Sylvia Browne seems to have filled in some of the cracks with this book.

The 50 color photographs of flowers taken over the past decade "by one who caused a modern shudder" are surprisingly conventional yet uniquely striking in their composition and lighting; Smith attributes their power to Mapplethorpe's "unflinching perception of the color, form and personality of the flower." Great book for the price...even if priced higher. I've seen the hardcover version and a later edition and I'm totally loving this abridged view of his flowers.

Not quite the best available

While the photos are stunning, the presentation is a little rough. While most photos are presented with a blank page opposite there are a few photos that face other photos. This is a little jarring but worse is the two photos that are printed across the facing page. The spine break really detracts from a pair of beautiful photos.
Mapplethorpe was a genius with a camera and this book gives us many reminders of his skill. The publisher, however, lacks the artistic eye that would have prevented the distractions of a few photos that are damaged or badly placed by the layout. Minus a star because it could have been layed out better

Perpetual Spring Provides Creative Inspiration!

This book deserves more than five stars. It is the finest set of flower photography that I have seen before, and presents more dimensions of what a flower can mean that I would have thought possible.
I took a course of creativity from author Dan Wakefield a number of years ago. One of the many excellent exercises we did was to take a flower and write as much as we could about what we observed during an hour. At the end of the time, I was bursting with new ideas for all kinds of things. Try it sometime!
Seeing this marvelous book by Robert Mapplethorpe (that would earn a G rating if it were a motion picture) reminded me of that exercise. I had the same feeling as I examined each image, and had a great desire to start taking notes.
The essay, A Final Flower, by Patti Smith helps put these great works in perspective. Mr. Mapplethorpe found it "as easy to hurl beauty as anything else." "He came, in time, to embrace the flower as the embodiment of all the contradictions reveling within [him]." He was inspired by "their sleekness, their fullness, Humble narcissus, Passionate zen." As such, he found flowers to be "worthy conspirators in the courting and development of conflicting emotions."
The images themselves evoke more complicated views than any others of flowers that I have seen. The closest to his style is that which Georgia O'Keeffe used in her painings. But there are more dimensions to these photographs.
For example, a single flower may evoke a part of a human body, but it will also stimulate an impression of a human emotion contained in the flower image separate from the body part. Further, the shadowed background behind the flower will add movement and context that greatly expand the meaning of the overall image. Mr. Mapplethorpe also displays a genius for using varieties of color together to express complicated rhythms that make looking at the images a lot like listening to a drum beating a distinctive tattoo. He also employs juxtaposition (to make one thing appear to be part of something else), allusions to emerging and receding, and contrasts to great effect.
The technical quality of the images is superb. The lighting, detail, and composition of each image are precisely as must have been intended. Each image is an exquisite gem. Although I liked all of the images, some appealed to me more than others. Here are my favorites:
Irises, 1988; Rose, 1989; Orchid, 1977; White Longstem Flower, 1982; Orchids, 1982; Orchid, 1986; Flowers in a Vase, 1985; Orchids, 1987; and Poppy, 1988 (second one). I would like to specially praise the astonishing Calla Lilies (1985-1988) for their amazing beauty and inspiring qualities.
Where else can something simple display so much important meaning and complexity about nature and the viewer? I suggest that you consider looking at leaves, rocks, and feathers as possible additional sources of inspiration. Try your hand at arranging tableaux that use the vocabulary of Mr. Mapplethorpe's work here.
May your heart and mind be suffused with the wonders around you . . . creating a meditation inspired by nature!

A must read - go to resource for any CX professional

I’ve been a #SuperFan of Jeanne Bliss for over a decade, and I love the updated Chief Customer Office 2.0 book. Having been a Customer Experience (CX) Executive at Symantec, Yahoo and Sage I know first hand the C-Suite conversations and key executive alignment that must occur for any company attempting a CX focused transformation. The simple notion of “Earning the right for your business to grow, through enriching the lives of your customers”, or replacing “Loyalty with Desire” as you stop chasing NPS scores, are game changers to help you drive the right discussions in the C-Suite.

The collective wisdom in this book retold through over 40 case studies, and the unique way the book is structured to around the 5 core competency framework, reinforced through ‘action labs’ and ‘my rock/my story’ make this book a go to resource for any in a Customer Success, or Experience leader. The CX Competency maturity index is a great starting point for someone new in the position, or in year 1, 2 or 3 of their tenure.

This book could change the way you look at leadership in any business!

This book, her third, is a book for this era for any leader looking to make real change.

If you are trying, with limited success, to become more customer-centric, this book can help you connect the dots. Using her own experience as well as her keen observations from more than twenty years in the field, Jeanne outlines the 5 Customer Leadership Competencies. These 5 Competencies provide the backbone to this book.

1. Honor and Manage Customers as Assets.

This is my favorite point in the whole book. The word honor is not used enough when referring to customers and the role they play for organizations. Jeanne impresses why this is critical. If you only read one section, read the chapter on this competency! It could change how you look at running a business.

2. Align Around Experience.

What would life be like if operations were around customer experience and innovation? It’s a great question any organization should ask.

3. Build a Customer Listening Path.

While this isn’t an uncommon recommendation, Jeanne breaks it down into a specific pursuit of action. (This is the chapter needed by so many companies who say “we need to listen more!”)

4. Proactive Experience Reliability and Innovation.

Another favorite point in the book – Know before customers tell you! Don’t wait for them to complain about something you already know isn’t working. Jeanne spends a chapter outlining the “Revenue Erosion Early Warning System.” This is sure to get any CEO’s attention!

5. Leadership, Accountability and Culture.

Culture must be proven. It’s a great point that is often overlooked. Being accountable is about much more than just talking the talk. If you aren’t prepared to tie each action with a result, then culture won’t make a difference.

This is the Handbook for Changing the Customer Experience Landscape

Jeanne Bliss does it again in this installment of how to develop a customer-fueled organization. Specifically, she gives a road map for instituting the Chief Customer Officer role into an organization. If you are a budding customer experience professional and feel your organization is ready to take this leap, Jeanne gives you a method to test and see if your company is really ready and then she lays out exactly how to go about making it happen. Bliss makes no bones that the CCO role is a challenging sell in our world of revenue and process-efficiency focus but she shows you how to move down the road.
The framework she sets forth involves first honoring customers as assets and the partners that they really are and making them the central mission of the company. She then moves to how to align the organization around a unified customer experience where silo-busting is necessary. Step 3 involves listening to the customer and getting intimate with their needs, wants, problems as well as ideas for innovation. Her next steps involve accountability and leadership as keys to making it all work.
As in all of her books, Jeanne Bliss brings her immense experience, passion and vision for a different business landscape to the fore in this work. If you are a customer experience professional, your library is incomplete without this volume, and if you are someone who wants change the world of customer experience, this is your handbook.

A Creepy Perlude to the End of the World

There are quite a few very disturbing things about the main character who narrates this short tale. He calmly explains step-by-step the progression he goes through from being a hum-drum insurance salesman to his role as the bringer of the apocalypse. On almost every page, I thought to myself "This is not how the end of the world happens," and at the same instant found myself thinking, "Yeah, it is . . . this is exactly how the end of the world happens." The plot is not complicated. There isn't much action. The characters are not particularly interesting -- but the story is really creepy and weird and scary because it takes you inside the mind of LUKAN - the bringer of the apocalypse. It simply rings true: This is how the world as we know it is going to end.

Prequel a Great Set Up

This novelette is a prequel to David Forsyth's SOVEREIGN SPIRIT saga. I have to admit that I have them on my Kindle but have not read them yet. Just as well. This is an excellent set up piece that explains how it all came to be and how the virus infects the world.

Well written, tightly plotted and good pacing and character development. Overall an excellent read and short at only 44 pages.

I look forward to reading the other books and may have to move them up my TBR list.

This is depopulation event. Will you survive?

The year is... well, it could be this year. There is overpopulation in the world and we are using up our resources faster than we can replace them. War looms or is going on in distant countries. And a man finds out that he is dying of cancer, and has nothing to lose. Contacted by a secret society, he is given the option to be a vector for a "sterility virus" by taking a Round-the-World trip in his last two months of life, and he's told that this virus will help reduce overpopulation.

What would you do?

This short story is about what Lukan decides to do, and how his actions affect others. Even though this is a short story, you are given enough information about Lukan and his life and thoughts to genuinely like the man even as you want to dislike him. Lukan is a prequel to the "Sovereign Spirit Saga", and if the rest of the story is written to this caliber I believe that it will be interesting and well-worth purchasing.

About the Author

Charles W. L. Hill is the Hughes M. Blake Professor of International Business at the School of Business, University of Washington. Professor Hill received his Ph.D. from the University of Manchester’s Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) in Britain. In addition to the University of Washington, he has served on the faculties of UMIST, Texas A&M University, and Michigan State University.
Professor Hill has published over 50 articles in peer-reviewed academic journals, including the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Strategic Management Journal, and Organization Science. He has also published two college texts: one on strategic management and the other on international business. Professor Hill has served on the editorial boards of several academic journals, including the Strategic Management Journal and Organization Science. Between 1993 and 1996, he was consulting editor at the Academy of Management Review.
Professor Hill teaches in the MBA, Executive MBA, Management, and Ph.D. programs at the University of Washington. He has received awards for teaching excellence in the MBA, Executive MBA, and Management programs. He has also taught customized executive programs.
Professor Hill works on a consulting basis with a number of organizations. His clients have included ATL, Boeing, BF Goodrich, Hexcel, House of Fraser, Microsoft, Seattle City Light, Tacoma City Light, Thompson Financial Services, and Wizards of the Coast.

Informative textbook, bargain edition!

The international edition of the 7th edition of International Business is a steal! It's the same as the hardcover US edition textbook word for word, but it's about $80 cheaper. As far as the textbook itself, it is very informative and easy to read.

A recommended textbook for undergraduates

I have used Charles Hill's textbook since 5th edition - it is now in 8th. While some aspects do dip into the arcane, especially economic theory, the book is the best I have found to produce a solid basis for an introduction to international business.

That said, in my view the textbook is not enough. The instructor must use resources such as the NY Times, WSJ and Economist. This is a very fast changing business field, and is headline driven. Relying solely on this textbook offers the students too little insights into fast changing paradigms and models.

Warning to instructors - the class supplements (Ppt charts, exam questions) have gotten weaker and you will need to supplement them with the above resources to ensure a vibrant and modern classroom experience.

Comprehensive text actually worth reading!

Well written text that covers many import international business topics. The charts and graphs are up to date. The case studies are very helpful. All in all a great text. It is one of the most read texts I have ever owned (and I am an engineer).
