Capital: Volume 1: A Critique of Political Economy (Penguin Classics), by Karl Marx

The first volume of a political treatise that changed the world

One of the most notorious works of modern times, as well as one of the most influential, Capital is an incisive critique of private property and the social relations it generates. Living in exile in England, where this work was largely written, Marx drew on a wide-ranging knowledge of its society to support his analysis and create fresh insights. Arguing that capitalism would cause an ever-increasing division in wealth and welfare, he predicted its abolition and replacement by a system with common ownership of the means of production. Capital rapidly acquired readership among the leaders of social democratic parties, particularly in Russia in Germany, and ultimately throughout the world, to become a work described by Marx friend and collaborator Friedrich Engels as “the Bible of the working class.”

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

From the Inside Flap
Capital, one of Marx's major and most influential works, was the product of thirty years close study of the capitalist mode of production in England, the most advanced industrial society of his day. This new translation of Volume One, the only volume to be completed and edited by Marx himself, avoids some of the mistakes that have marred earlier versions and seeks to do justice to the literary qualities of the work. The introduction is by Ernest Mandel, author of Late Capitalism, one of the only comprehensive attempts to develop the theoretical legacy of Capital.

Great Read
By cerwin2
It is hard to write a small review. I can't put 100 pages of notes on this book. It is a book to help anyone understand how capital works. Volume two is more about the circulation process. Please read it and don't quit after chapter 3. It is a long book and it is somewhat complicated. David Harvey has written a companion to the book as well as he does a extensive reading of the book that is offered online for free. It can be obtained through Itunes and his website, davidharvey.org. You must read this book to understand a whole different form of thinking. Also for a thorough understanding of this book try to read Alexander Kojeve, Introduction to the Reading of Hegel: Lectures on Phenomenology of Spirit for a deep understanding of Marxism through a lens of Hegelian thought, Hegel was a teacher of Marx and Mar was a Hegelian thinker. If you are a historian you need to read Marx's work in order to be a better historian.

Surprise!
By Lionel D. Youst
This book surprised me. I expected a dry, boring, difficult tome that would not interest me in the long run. I was (mostly) wrong. Although some of it is quite tedious, some a bit repetitive, and parts that are incomprehensible, there are long stretches -- especially of the historical parts -- that are fascinating and read very well.

I loved reading Chapter 10, On the Working Day. That's where we learn for sure that time is money, and the struggle for limits to the working day are the crux of the class struggle (still going on with hassles over vacation and sick leave, for example). It is the worker's time that gives value to the commodity, and the endless accumulation of commodities is what capitalism is about. I also liked Chapter 15, on Machinery and Large-Scale Industry (in large part because technological history is something that interests me anyhow). And all of Part 8, "So-Called Primitive Accumulation," was fascinating. That is where we see the ultimate contradiction of Capitalism, its dependence on perpetually accumulating more, compounded annually, forever. Such endless growth comes largely from dispossessing others of what they already had, and endless exploitation of the earth's resources, ad infinitum.

David Harvey, who has taught Capital Volume 1 at City University of New York for many years said that he has considered teaching the course backwards, beginning at the end with Part 8 so that the students would have the historical context before going into the technical parts. I think I could also recommend that anyone undertaking Capital to read Part 8 first. It will surprise you what a really good writer Marx was, when he wanted to be.

It takes a lot of guts to launch into a thousand page tome, written 150 years ago on one of the driest, most dismal of all subjects: political economy. It is for that reason that I used the free on-line lecture series by David Harvey from his course on Marx at City University of New York, and used it as my guide as I went through the book. Without such a guide, I probably wouldn't have tackled it but with the guide it is more than worth the effort. Buy the Penguin Classics edition of Capital and download the lectures, one at a time and when you are finished you will be far better educated than you are now!

Beware of the Kindle Edition
By K. M. Norwood
The Kindle edition is garbled. Random chunks of text are just missing, so that half of one sentence gets joined with half of another sentence. The result is to make a difficult text impossible. Penguin should be ashamed to have their company name associated with such a shoddy product.

Solid Tarkington
By A Customer
Tarkington manages to cram an East of Eden epic into 350 pages. The story begins with the sallow and sickly Bibbs coming home from a sanitarium. He has been placed there because of his nerves. His father, known as Sheridan, is the leading capitalist in the bustling Indiana town and his other two sons are at the helm of his money making machine. Sheridan despises his son for being weak. Bibbs, is a poet and dislikes work. He is very smart and not interested in making money. He'd rather write and think. The primary focus of the story is his rehabilitation. He discovers his next door neighbor, Mary, and falls in love with her (typical Tarkington romance). His father forces him into the company's "inner" works were he is forced to work at a noisy machine all day. He dislikes what capitalism and greed has done, noting the heavy smog in the air (ashes come down like snow) and the problems of capitalism. However he grows stronger and we find him to be a very capable man. The "turmoil" is Bibbs finding a balance between working and "living." Tarkington almost comes off as a Sinclair Lewis or Ellen Glasgow at times, but overall there is a LOT going on in this novel, which carries it along extremely well. I wasn't that happy with the ending, as I didn't think Bibbs had found a compromise but rather an acceptance of his fate. One of the best Tarkington books I've read, though.

Growth
By Dave_42
"The Turmoil" by Booth Tarkington, was the first novel in what would become the "Growth" trilogy. Originally published in 1915, "The Turmoil" takes place in a fictional mid-west city which is never named, but which is probably modeled on Indianapolis. The name of the trilogy is appropriate, not only because these novels deal with the growth in the country, and the affect of industrialization on society, but also with Tarkington's growth as a writer which appears to have come from his taking time off after writing "The Guest of Quesnay" and resulted in novels that were much fresher and more innovative.

The focus of the novel is on the Sheridan family, which has recently come to wealth through the strong business practices of the father (James), who puts his business before everything else. Other members of the family are the weak wife, the eldest son James Jr. (i.e. Jim) - who is being groomed to replace his father, the middle child Roscoe - who is being treated like a runner-up, a daughter Edith - who is pushing to make the family part of society, and the youngest son Bibbs - who is a disappointment to his father, because he has a much different outlook on what is important in life. It is Bibbs who is the main character of the novel. Other key characters include Sibyl Sheridan - the wife of Roscoe, Bobby Lamhorn - the love interest of Edith, and Mary Vertreese, the daughter of the Vertreese family, which is an old and prestigious family in the area, but one which is keeping up appearances as they are almost without money.

There are still some issues with the racial interaction between the Sheridans and their servants which some will find offensive. That being said, this novel doesn't feel as dated as some of Tarkington's other works, though it is clearly a piece representative of the period in which it was written. The challenges that face Bibbs, and the changes he goes through are like a mini-representation of the changes facing the country with the impact of industrialization. The transformation of Bibbs is an interesting one, and doesn't follow the path one would expect. For a while, it looks as if Bibbs way of life would come out as the strongest, as tragedy and circumstances cause big changes in the Sheridan family. But Tarkington doesn't allow things to be that easy, and instead Bibbs changes his ways to take on the role that his father needs. There is certainly sadness when Bibbs makes the break from his old interests, but his transformation is a strong one, and while he couldn't have survived in this new life at the start of the novel, at the end he thrives.

Another interesting aspect of the novel is the difference between the old prestigious family, the Vertreeses, and the new powerful and wealthy family, the Sheridans. The Vertreeses are trying to hide the desperate financial condition of their family, and the pairing of their daughter to James Sheridan Jr. is seen by Mr. and Mrs. Vertreese as a necessary evil to get them out of their difficulties. Initially Mary Vertreese is willing to go along with her role, but it is the impact that Bibbs has on her that changes her mind and has her change her mind. As the novel continues, it is clear that it is Mary and Bibbs that are drawn to each other, though they are not willing to admit it, especially Bibbs.

Tarkington takes no position of what is right or wrong in the conflict between the old and the new, or the industrialization of society. He treats it as simply a change which is inevitable and one which is going to have impact on society and the family. I don't believe this is the best writing that Tarkington had done in his career up to this point, though it is close. On the other hand, it is among the best of his story concepts thus far, and the continuation of that "Growth" concept would earn him the Pultizer Prize for "The Magnificent Ambersons" a few years later. I'm rounding this one up to four stars.

Business 1, Art 0 (Game still in progress)
By Bomojaz
This novel is about how the artistic soul is sacrificed on the altar of big business. Except in this case the artist willingly makes the sacrifice and has no regrets afterward. Thus, the novel can't be counted a tragedy. John Sheridan lives by one mantra: Bigger is better. He owns the Sheridan Pump Works and is determined to make it an industrial giant. He brings his two oldest sons into the business only to see them fail. His youngest son, Bibbs, is sickly and dreams of becoming a writer. But his father won't hear of it and puts him to work in the company, too. Surprisingly, Bibbs thrives in this setting and pushes the company onto ever greater levels of success. His fianc is appalled that he would go along with his father's wishes, but Bibbs assures her he never would have made it as a writer and he made the right decision. It's a surprising development: one expects Bibbs to stand up to his father and declare his artistic endeavors more important. But I think Tarkington is being realistic here, and he is careful to develop Bibbs's character so that we can see him appreciate the usefulness his life takes on from the emptiness he'd known before because of his illness. Tarkington was not afraid to praise big business, though he also knew what to criticize about it, too (one thing he was quick to point out was how it spoiled natural beauty). If John Sheridan could declare, "Wealth! I will get wealth! I will make Wealth! I will sell Wealth for more Wealth," his son Bibbs could remark on how his father had served business blindly while he, Bibbs, believed "If man would let me [business] serve him, I should be beautiful." There is no irony intended in this, just a statement of belief. The first volume in a trilogy on industrialism, it's an interesting work.

And you thought your job was hell. . .

Annie Lou Riddle had a plan: Move to New York City. Break into the fashion industry. Work her way to the top. Nowhere in that scenario did she expect to accidentally sell her soul in exchange for a job at Hot! Magazine. Oops.

Demons, it seems, aren't big on letting mortals off the hook. Now Annie is stuck working as assistant/personal slave to Finola White--diva extraordinaire, and glamorous she-devil. Whatever Finola wants, she gets, and she wants Annie to match her up with Nick Rossi, the gorgeous detective investigating shady doings at Hot!

Frankly, Annie sees the appeal. Nick is effortlessly sexy, rugged, charming--and the one man Annie should definitely not be flirting with, or kissing, or. . . Oops. But some loves are too devilishly hot to resist. . .

Praise for the novels of Kathy Love

Intrigue, a touch of mystery and a whole lotta demons!
By tsteiner
My review is for 3.5 Stars.

Annie is a southern girl transplanted into the dog-eat-dog world of New York City. She came to New York to make it in the fashion industry. Now is her chance. Too bad she didn't know going to work for Fiona White was a win/lose proposition. Win the best job at the hottest magazine in the world. Lose your soul!

Nick has a problem. He is trying to prove to his superiors that he is not crazy. Yes, he lost control and said that a murder suspect looked like a monster awhile back, but he was just a bit overworked, or so he thinks. Little did he know that he was not crazy and now he is surrounded by real monsters, demons. He just walked into the biggest nest in New York, Hot! Magazine.

Annie and Nick are attracted at first collision. The problem is they can't seal the deal. Annie's boss, Finola wants Nick too, and she always gets what she wants, ALWAYS!

This is a light romantic read. The bedroom scenes are spicy but not scorching. The villains are despicable yet not scary. The romance between Annie and Nick is fun. Their journey to each other is riddled with demonic bosses, uninterested boyfriends and well the possibility of going to hell. It is a rather easy read. It did have some problems for me though.

You would think by the look of the cover that this is a light comedic read. I guess in a way it is, but then it isn't. This book is an enigma. The cover is very cutesy. The plot had the potential to be a cute fun story, but really wasn't. I think it tried to be a bit of a dark comedy with over the top characters, but it was quirky. It just didn't feel right to me, maybe because I did start the book with a preconceived notion from the cover. I don't think poor Annie looked that chipper, even once in the story. Not to mention Nick was a bit too rough and blue collar to wear a suit. He was a man's man. YUM! My biggest concern and problem is this is a light romance and Annie and Nick had unprotected sex, every time. I was a bit shocked and disappointed, especially in today's age. I've read erotic romances with safer sex. Okay, I'm stepping off my soapbox now.

Devilishly Hot is a nice change from the standard paranormal romances out there. It is a novel filled with hellish plots, twisty turns, and a dog. This is an original story and pleasantly entertaining. There were a few nice surprises and the characters were rather unique. If you enjoy Ms. Love's other novels you will likely enjoy Devilishly Hot too.

Devilishly Hot just left me cold
By melindeeloo
Devilishly Hot just never managed to engage me, even when I finally got to the smexy stuff. I liked the intuitive police detective Nick but I never really felt all that sympathetic for Annie, who has a lien on her soul, and the fact that she walks the edge of cheating on her boyfriend didn't help - even though we could see the resolution to that pesky boyfriend problem coming from a mile away. I know the boyfriend was there to slow Nick down, but I really think that the green eyed monster (actually Annie's boss Fiola is a demon and doesn't have green eyes but...) would have been enough.

But in the end it all boiled down to the premise just wasn't that fun, now if it had been Fiola's lust demon right hand man looking for redemption, it would be a different story - a more interesting one... And the ultimate resolution to Nick and Annie's dilemma was deux et machina (from a way further south than heaven.) Though I must admit I got a kick out of the last page, I just don't know whether that was enough to make me pick up the next one.

Summary
-------
Little did Annie realize when she got the offer that her dream job was actually the job from hell - literally - and her boss, Fiola, at Hot! magazine is a demon whose every impossible wish is Annie's command and the price of failure is her soul. Since Fiola's been a little hard on the past help, a string of disappearances lead police detective Nick to investigate Hot! and when he literally bumps into Annie the attraction is instantaneous. Soon the only thing standing between them are: Annie's endangered soul, a slew of missing persons, Annie's live in boyfriend and the fact that Fiola wants Nick for herself and is not one to tolerate anyone thwarting her plans...

Devilishly Hot
By Patti TheLoveJunkee
Annie Lou Riddle is living in the New York and has just decided to pack it in and go back to Mississippi when she gets a phone call that changes her life: HOT! magazine has just called to offer her her dream job.

Fast forward three years and Annie is miserable; her boss is evil - no really, she's a demon. Annie sold her soul for 10 years of being Finola White's assistant. While the perks are great - fabulous apartment and great clothes, the downside is that if she can't please Finola and breaks her contract, Satan gets her soul.

Detective Nick Rossi is investigating the disappearance of 21 people over a period of a few years. The only thing they all have in common? They all worked at HOT! Magazine. Nick is instantly attracted to Finola's beautiful assistant, but Finola is attracted to Nick. He knows something's not quite right, but can't figure out what it is, and can't get proof the magazine is responsible for the missing people.

Now Annie's fighting her attraction to Nick and working like crazy to get Finola through Fashion Week without losing her soul in the process.

My thoughts:
Devilishly Hot reminded me of a paranormal Devil Wears Prada: Finola and Annie were definitely Miranda and Andy. However, where Andy would've just been fired, Annie would have lost her immortal soul by displeasing her boss.

While Devilishly Hot was cute, it couldn't hold my attention. I couldn't reconcile good, kind Annie selling her soul for a job, no matter how fabulous. I just couldn't make that leap, and it prohibited me from enjoying the story because I kept waiting for an explanation of what could have possibly made her sell her soul, and it never really came.

Nick was a good hero - masculine, possessive, kind and loving. I liked him with Annie and their HEA was a nice note to end on.

While Finola and Satan were a bit caricature-ish, Finola's subordinate demon, Tristian, was a nice touch - I actually liked his character more than Fiona. To be honest, aside from Tristian the demons were a bit silly.

All told, Devilishly Hot was a cute, light read, if a bit silly at times.

    Review

"I consider Keeping Your Kids on God's Side to be an important, eye-opening 'gateway' book. Natasha has done a wonderful job of quickly introducing the important issues and evidences from the perspective of a parent. She's engaging, thoughtful, and she knows how to throw the ball so you can catch it. Let Keeping Your Kids on God's Side serve as an introduction to the most important work you will ever do as a parent."
—J. Warner Wallace, author of Cold-Case Christianity and God's Crime Scene, international speaker, professor at Biola University

"I almost wish my children were young again so I could use Natasha Crain's book with them. Through her parenting blog, Crain has access to the most important questions and challenges parents are hearing from their children today. She writes in strong, vigorous prose and does a great job of pitching her answers at a level that parents can understand—and, even more importantly, that they can use."
—Nancy Pearcey, author of Total Truth and Finding Truth, apologetics professor, Houston Baptist University

"Keeping Your Kids on God's Side is a timely and much-needed book. Natasha provides a road map so parents feel equipped to have the critical (and difficult) faith conversations with their kids. If you want to see your kids have a vibrant faith, then get this book and start having these conversations with your kids today!"
—Sean McDowell, author of more than 15 books, including A New Kind of Apologist, international speaker, professor at Biola University

"Keeping Your Kids on God's Side is an outstanding resource every Christian parent should have in their home library...this book is the most accessible, non-intimidating treatment of key apologetics issues I've seen to date, and I will be recommending it to every parent I encounter!"
—Melissa Cain Travis, Assistant Professor of Apologetics, Houston Baptist University, author of Young Defenders series of apologetics books for kids

"Parents, wake up. The secular culture is challenging our kids like never before and we've got to prepare them for the barrage of false ideas they will most certainly face. Apologetic conversations are no longer optional; they're a necessary part of our kids' discipleship. Thankfully, Keeping Your Kids on God's Side is the resource we all need. It's accessible and comprehensive, and it will equip you to engage your kids in conversations that count, big time."
—Brett Kunkle, Student Impact Director, Stand to Reason

"Many well-intentioned, godly parents unknowingly send their children out into the world malnourished by an insufficient diet of evidence for their faith...We know. Ratio Christi sees it every day in our chapters on high school and college campuses. Students come to us starving for ways to defend their faith from intellectual assault. As the director of parent outreach at Ratio Christi, I've been looking for a tool to recommend to parents so they can start this training early at home. This is it. Start feeding your family a steady diet of Keeping Your Kids on God's Side to strengthen their hearts and minds for the battles against the secular smorgasbord they will face."
—Julie Loos, Director, Ratio Christi Boosters

"As a youth pastor, I'm thrilled to see an apologetics book written with parents in mind! It is not a matter of if your children or students will encounter arguments against Christianity, but when. Questions will come, and when they do, where will your kids find answers? The Internet? Their college professors? Atheist friends? We need to take responsibility to equip ourselves to be that resource...this book will help you do just that!"
—Patrick Brown, Student Ministries Director, Whitehaven Road Baptist Church

"As a pastor over family ministries, I am very excited about this book! It answers many of the strong objections against Christianity in amazing depth, yet in such a clear manner that even someone new to apologetics can easily understand it."
—Jared Novak, Family Pastor, New Life Church Bonita Springs

The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby, by Tome Wolfe

This first book by Tom Wolfe is a gathering of his best work where the author takes a sharp-eyed look at the American scene, and zeroes in on the new, exotic forms of status-seeking - social, cultural, and otherwise - that were flourishing at the time across the country from New York to Los Angeles.

A central notion threading through Mr. Wolfe's rich assortment of observations is that recent years have seen the emergence of a good many intriguing art forms and styles of life, having nothing at all to do with the 'elite' culture of the past. Vulgar and common to the Establishment, they really express the ordinary American's sense of form and beauty. The Twist, The Beatles, the Surfers, the Bouffant Hairdos, the Drag Racers are all expressions of this exuberant new culture, which might be called Postwar Teenage. The epitome of this pop culture is the neon city of Las Vegas.

Wolfe also observes the activities of older culture-makers, such as investigating the way the 'upper crust' frantically seeks new forms to preserve its statuts against the 'common man', whether in raising children, fashion, nightlife, or 'art-worship.'

Throughout, Wolfe's eye for the crucial detail is startling, his ear for the speech of all sorts of people uncanny, his wit and view of life entirely original .

Far out, Tom Wolfe! Real buttonholes!
    By Ricardo Mio
When I was in college, the heroes of the journalism department were Vietnam reporters David Halberstam and Neil Sheehan, and the so-called "New Journalism" reporters: Hunter Thompson, Gay Talese, and Tom Wolfe. Today, the best known is Tom Wolfe, thanks to books like "The Right Stuff." His first book was "The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby" published in 1965. It's an anthology of his first magazine articles, that appeared in Esquire and other periodicals.

The magazine article that first attracted attention was "There goes [Vroom! Vroom!] That Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby" about the California custom car culture. At the time, Wolfe didn't know a carburetor from a muffler, being a New Yorker without a car. However, a week in Southern California changed all that. And how. He quickly spotted the best and the brightest of the customizers was a goateed beatnik-type named "Big Daddy" Ed Roth. Roth's cross-town rival George Barris built far more custom cars than Roth, but Roth was the wild visionary--highly-intelligent, articulate, and a little crazy. Wolfe wrote about Roth with insight and understanding that the trade magazines like "Hot Rod," "Car Craft" and "Rod and Custom" apparently lacked.

It was the same thing with "The Last American Hero." Wolfe went down to North Carolina, spent a week with good-old boy NASCAR driver Junior Johnson, and returned with an insight into Johnson and Southern-style stock car racing that completely eluded magazines that covered the sport, among them "Car and Driver," and "Motor Trend."

Wolfe wrote about fashion, too. In "The Secret Vice," he told how Lyndon Johnson woke up one morning and realized that John Kennedy was not only smarter than he, but better dressed ("He dresses like some British ambassador"). Johnson zeroed in on the sleeve of Kennedy's custom-made suits, and realized the button holes on the sleeve were real: they actually buttoned and unbuttoned. The buttons on the sleeve of Johnson's off-the-rack Sears and Roebuck suits, on the other hand, were sewn on top of the fabric, like some decoration. Old Lyndon wanted real buttonholes! He flew to London (where Kennedy's suits were custom-made), walked into the first tailor he could find, and said, "Make me a suit with real buttonholes! I want to look like a British ambassador!"

All the first great magazine articles are here, including "The Fifth Beatle" about brash New York DJ Murray the K, "The Peppermint Lounge" where the Beatles twisted the night away, "Loverboy of the Bourgeoise" about Cary Grant, "The Marvelous Mouth " about Muhammad Ali, "The New Art Gallery Society," "The Nanny Mafia" and on and on. Classics, everyone. And a delight to read--and reread. As one critic put it, "Tom Wolf is a (blankety-blank) joy."

Here We Go Again, Hold On To Your Hats Middle America
    By propertius
Of course Mr. Wolfe has produced another lapidary exposition on American culture, but what is so refreshing is that there is no condescending in these pieces. Vegas, hot rods, etc. you name it and if it falls under Mr. Wolfe's scrutiny it will be treated, if not with respect, then with understanding. This book like all his works is about AMERICA as only TOM WOLFE can render it and the hell with that early Frenchman, well almost.

If Wolfe seems too keen on displaying his erudite at times almost encyclopedic literary and historical antecedents, it is only because he is and was trained to be that way. Unfortunately his critics on E 43 st in Manhattan will never get over this. But let us face he does write for the common in an uncommon fashion.

    Classic Wolfe...

If you're a Tom Wolfe fan, this is obviously a must-read. The uninitiated can use this as a fine example of New Journalism.
The strongest pieces are up front, specifically on Las Vegas and the beginnings of stock car racing and the title-piece on kustom car culture in Southern California.
The second half of the book lags a bit as most of the stories about the upper-crust of 1960s New York fall into the we-get-the-idea category. Upon modern reading, some of the material seems dated - winkle-picker boots, etc. - but charmingly so. This is a great snapshot of Wolfe and the send-up style that would come to define him.
