Once Upon a Twilight.com Reviews
By Once Upon a Twilight
Aside from the actual content, the physical copy of this book is just beautiful. I had never seen any book designed in the way this one is. Every couple pages would be white text on black paper and different illustration done in purely black and white. So interesting and cool.

Now to the even more beautiful content. It took me a while to read this one; not necessarily because it was long, because it wasn’t, it was just so much. Not only is the writing heart-wrenching, it actually makes you feel vulnerable as you read it. That was my experience, anyway. In a recent Instagram post, R.M. Drake stated that this book was dedicated to a late friend of his. You really do feel the love bleeding from his sentences as you read this masterpiece. It’s just so pure, honest, and raw. He writes about life and love so delicately, yet so bluntly. It almost makes you feel as if you should just be living for more.

I love everything that I’ve read from R.M. Drake so far, and I don’t think I’ll be stopping any time soon. - Bianca B.

So happy I purchased this book! I love reading all his posts on Instagram and thought it would be nice to not only support his work but have a hard copy to read whenever I'd like. I truly enjoyed reading every page! R.M. Drake uses his words in a way that really speaks to his readers. I also like the artwork one each page and it helps showcase the creative work from others.

If you already like his work from seeing it on social media forums, definitely get this book. You won't be disappointed!

THE LIBRARY OF CONTEMPORARY THOUGHT
"The audience for everything has grown in size, and the number of experiences to watch has grown even more rapidly. These two factors mean that the nature of the audience must change. When that occurs, our current standards of excellence need to be rethought and redefined. New standards our grandparents could not have imagined need to be developed. . . ."

INTERACTIVE EXCELLENCE
Defining and Developing New Standards for the Twenty-first Century

"Gertrude Stein said that 'great art is irritation.' Mosquitoes irritate us, as do certain sounds and images. But does that make fingernails dragging across a blackboard art? Hardly. If something awakens us, moves us, transforms us, makes us feel and think in a new way, makes itself a part of us, that is a measure of greatness. Great art is what challenges us to see ourselves and each other more clearly. Great art makes us understand our relationship to the world we are in. Sometimes to change how we think we must look from a new perspective. Irritation makes us move away from our comfortable way of looking--and our comfortable way of creating art. A movie like The Graduate or a book like The Grapes of Wrath stimulates us--irritates us, in a way--to become part of a conversation, with others and within ourselves, about who, how, why, where, and when we are. . . ."

From the Publisher
I recently spoke to Ed Schlossberg at a party about the future of books in this quickly changing medium. He's incredibly knowledgeable about the new technology and told me about a computer screen that's the thickness of a piece of paper--that you can actually download a book onto and more or less wave a magic wand in order to turn a page. A few nights later I saw this technology on the nightly news--it's absolutely breathtaking. Like Ed's book, it makes you wonder what our lives will contain fifty years from now.

Dumbing down our society
By Theodore A. Rushton
One of the great features of America is its ability to express the great cultural icons of the past in terms that the layman can understand and appreciate, a skill that ranges from Walt Disney's `Fantasia' to the more recent Jerry Springer show.
Edwin Schlossberg is a fan of Springer, not Fantasia. Springer, after all, offers classic Shakespearean themes of love, hate, betrayal, revenge and triumph in the form of risque snippets about real people edited into a highly profitable 47 or so minutes. He's got all of the elements of Shakespeare, except he crams them into a bleeped-out version of what used to be called "tabloid trash."
For the average viewer, the essence of a Springer show is, "See, some people are dumber than you." It's the same formula supermarket tabloids use, reassuring their readers that the rich and famous led lives that are as miserable or worse than any reader. Misery loves company, and stupidity loves a crowd. Both vastly outnumber the elites of society.
Schlossberg is popular and powerfully influential. He knows how to draw a crowd. Forget about intellect, his emphasis is the creation of empty fun. He appeals to museums that want thousands of admission fees, but don't care whether the patrons learn a thing. Life is no longer about education, it's about playing little games in a setting that offers absolutely no danger of intellectual exercise.
He is an astute, engaging and perceptive writer; the opening chapters of his book dissect the impact of new technology upon old culture. Then, his analysis falls apart; instead of educating people to appreciate the quality of excellence, he pretends the Beatles equal Bach, Beethoven and Brahms. A generation ago, the Beatles might have been the first step on the road to musical knowledge; today, people such as Schlossberg thinks that's as much as anyone needs to learn.
The result, in the media, in museums, in symphony orchestras, in dramatic theater, is a dumbing down of content. His goal isn't to uplift the masses to a new level of excellence; instead, it's telling people there's great merit in the lowest common denominator. He's very successful at it; he founded a company called `Edwin Schlossberg Inc.' that advises cultural institutions how to reach the masses. To use a sports metaphor, his approach isn't to offer a finely tuned discussion on the physics of the curve ball; instead, he says if you play and understand sandlot ball, you'll have a better appreciation of major league baseball.
He may be right. For too long, the social elites looked down their noses at anyone with a lesser understanding of high culture; Schlossberg is an expert at discovering the simplest elements of culture and using theme to explain overall themes. No one can pretend the old methods succeeded; leaving the failures of the past behind, Schlossberg explains how the twenty-first century will build a new cultural awareness from the ground up.
There are dozens of institutions and attractions that are ineffectively welded to the past; this book explains the new emphasis on understanding for the masses instead of privilege for the elites. The older generation may be horrified at the prospect of the Beatles and Beethoven; but, more progressive people will understand how lowbrow culture inevitably leads some to highbrow excellence.
In other words, the world has a massive range of attractions. The ones that will survive and thrive are those that learn to appeal to the people. Schlossberg is an excellent guide. Or, a cultural Philistine.

How interactive design helps people make choices
By A Customer
Shlossberg's book, at first a bit ethereal, comes solidly down to earth in the last third, where he describes the interactive exhibits he has created in his quest to educate the masses to make sophisticated choices. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, for example, faced with an indifferent public and declining audience, turn to Schlossberg for assistance. Drawing inspiration from Indonesian shadow-puppet theatre, in which the audience not only watches from their seats in front, but over the course of the play wander backstage to check out the puppet masters and the props, Schlossberg devises an exhibit which will bring people "backstage" to the creative process of music making. The CSO project encourages visitors to compose their own bits of music electronically, then join these fragments with others to make up a virtual orchestra, thereby making the audience creators of their own symphony. The experience of working through this exhibit, Schlossberg believes, will give neophytes the critical skills and knowledge needed to enjoy what had been unfamiliar and difficult music.

Contradictions in logic and example
By magicjim@islc.net Jim Callahan
After reading Interactive Excellence, I found this book contains exessive contradictions in both logic and example. Mr. Schlossberg does a exeedingly competent job in his chosen feild, but seems ill equipped to discuss his topic to the depth it needs to be examined. This book could be edited down to a good two pages that would be informative. Possibly to use as a preface to a discussion If you think I am wrong, let me know. I would be more than happy to expand the level of the authors understanding on the subject over coffee and doughnuts sometime. Heck, he might even convince me the last twenty years of audience research I have done was wasted time. Signed...Master Magician and Paranormalist JIM CALLAHAN

Water Based Fire Suppression Systems
By Valeriano Barril
The book represents a powerful opportunity to understand those basic concepts that characterize water based fire suppression systems. Chapters are very well written and plenty of examples which represents an helpful tool to gain a deeper understanding.

For those whose have deep knowledge in the subject area already, I do advice to get the book anyway. It is essential for a good personal collection.

Best basic fire sprinkler book I've come accross.
By Matt Dillon
In my opinion, after more than thirty years in the fire sprinkler business, "Design of Water-Based Protection Systems," is by far the best introductory level text into the water-based systems world of fire protection. I personally used the text in the training environment for several years.

The book is well written, concise and well received by students. I would highly recommend this text for anyone contemplating setting up a training situation in the industry.

Just Started But very informative so far
By eLSyDro
This book may be a tad bit outdated, but the contents still applies. This book is geared toward a small group of people, though maybe larger than I think. I've not read near 1/4 of the book, but I can tell that this book is for those that are interested in learning as much about Water-based Fire Protection, and the design of such systems. I am a Fire Protection design technician of N.I.C.E.T. Level 1 trying to move on to Level II and eventually III or IV. Since this is not a trade that is taught in many schools, so it's on the job training, and occasionally any other training available, I frequently take online courses as well as webinars that pertain to this trade. So recently in a magazine FPC- A fire protection Contractor magazine, that listed multiple books that might be helpful all around, this was one of the books. This book cover's a wide array of topics, from NICET required learning, to special hazard's protection systems. Water-Spray Systems, Deluge Systems, and Mist Systems on down covering much of the Fire Protection Handbook, but more for the designer. I would definitely recommend this book to any one in the Fire Protection Industry, especially those that are designer's of water-based systems, be it fresh/new designers to seasoned veteran's. This book is great.

A hidden treasure of straight-forward inspiration

I read this book for the first time back in 1980 when Steven R Covey was not a household name. It helped me to ACT where I had previously only THOUGHT about making changes in my life. I found that for me, it was a life changing event. I read it again in 2001 and it had the same effect. It amazes me that the council and advice offered within would be as applicable today as in 1980. That's the power of this book. It was deeper and wider than imagined and I believe it to be one of the best self-help books of all time when dealing with life in a spiritual realm.

Great application of spiritual principles to everyday life.

I found this was very applicable Covey-ese in a spiritual setting. It made religious principles that I feel strongly about, more realistic for day-to-day situations. Although sometimes the advice was a little simplistic, it was generally very well thought out, and realistic.

The science and engineering of remote sensing--theory and applications

The Second Edition of this authoritative book offers readers the essential science and engineering foundation needed to understand remote sensing and apply it in real-world situations. Thoroughly updated to reflect the tremendous technological leaps made since the publication of the first edition, this book covers the gamut of knowledge and skills needed to work in this dynamic field, including:
* Physics involved in wave-matter interaction, the building blocks for interpreting data
* Techniques used to collect data
* Remote sensing applications

The authors have carefully structured and organized the book to introduce readers to the basics, and then move on to more advanced applications. Following an introduction, Chapter 2 sets forth the basic properties of electromagnetic waves and their interactions with matter. Chapters 3 through 7 cover the use of remote sensing in solid surface studies, including oceans. Each chapter covers one major part of the electromagnetic spectrum (e.g., visible/near infrared, thermal infrared, passive microwave, and active microwave).

Chapters 8 through 12 then cover remote sensing in the study of atmospheres and ionospheres. Each chapter first presents the basic interaction mechanism, followed by techniques to acquire, measure, and study the information, or waves, emanating from the medium under investigation. In most cases, a specific advanced sensor is used for illustration.

The book is generously illustrated with fifty percent new figures. Numerous illustrations are reproduced in a separate section of color plates. Examples of data acquired from spaceborne sensors are included throughout. Finally, a set of exercises is provided.

This book is based on an upper-level undergraduate and first-year graduate course taught by the authors at the California Institute of Technology. Because of the multidisciplinary nature of the field and its applications, it is appropriate for students in electrical engineering, applied physics, geology, planetary science, astronomy, and aeronautics. Lords Of The Harvest: Biotech, Big Money, And The Future Of Food, by Dan Charles

Biotech companies are creating designer crops with strange powers-from cholesterol-reducing soybeans to tobacco plants that act as solar-powered pharmaceutical factories. They promise great benefits: better health for consumers and more productive agriculture. But the vision has a dark side. In Lords of the Harvest, Daniel Charles tells the real story behind "Frankenstein foods"-the story you won't hear from the biotech companies or their fiercest opponents. He reveals for the first time the cutthroat scientific competition and backroom business deals that led to the first genetically engineered foods. And he exposes the secrets of campaigns on both sides of the Atlantic aimed at bringing down the biotech industry. A riveting tale of boundless ambition, political intrigue, and the quest for knowledge, Lords of the Harvest is ultimately a story of idealism and conflicting dreams about the shape of a better world.

Amazon.com Review
Just as science learned to decode DNA through reverse genetics, a little bit of reverse reading might help explain why NPR correspondent Daniel Charles set out to write the agrobiotech equivalent of fly-on-the-wall industry epics like World War 3.0, Liar's Poker, and Hit Men. Read the epilogue first--here's where he most eloquently explains the dueling American myths (of both scientific progress and the sanctity of the land as God-given gifts) that have fueled the recent battle of biotechnology against environmentalism and consumer advocacy over genetically modified crops. It's a necessarily stirring justification for a story that, however well told, may lack for a general audience some of the pathos or glamour of similar tussles within such fields as medicine or entertainment.

This is really the story of one company--American chemical giant Monsanto, which, some 20 years ago, pushed forward the technology of injecting different plants such as corn and soybeans with genes that would make them able to act as their own insecticides (insects would simply die upon eating them). From there, Monsanto went on to orchestrate a stunning takeover of much of the seed business, but its plans for what seemed like world agricultural domination were trounced when first European, then U.S. activists sparked a massive backlash against GMOs ("genetically modified organisms") pumped up with the company's patented genes--even absent substantive scientific evidence that genetically modified crops were any more harmful (or, for that matter, more modified) to people or the environment than those without designer genes.

Given the recent explosion of genetic research, it's fascinating to see the relatively primitive origins of this field in the early 1980s, and to discover the inner workings of world agribusiness, especially (as the farm-bred Charles rightly points out) in a society where most people have no idea where their food comes from, or what happens to it along the way. It's just that Charles's valiant attempt to make a bunch of nerdy, competitive scientists and soulless, profit-grubbing Monsanto execs interesting is mostly in vain. Still, you have to love the early '90s comedy of errors that was the grandiose launch and swift demise of the superengineered tomato--especially when an old-school tomato breeder tries to tell her boss, a biotech exec and agricultural illiterate, that nature's breeding process can't be accelerated to meet production goals. His curt response? "Think out of the box." (Or crate, as it were.) --Timothy Murphy

From Library Journal
A former technology correspondent for National Public Radio and Washington correspondent for New Scientist, Charles is also an excellent storyteller. Here he covers the history of genetic engineering in plant crops from the early 1980s to the present. Among the episodes covered are the surprise appearance of Starlink genes in taco shells, the Flavr Savr tomato, and the infamous Terminator gene that would produce crops with sterile seeds. What makes this book particularly interesting are the author's tales of the key individuals and groups involved in the biotechnology controversy: researchers, corporations (especially Monsanto and Pioneer Hi-Bred), farmers, the media, environmental and consumer activists, and the consumers themselves. This carefully researched and balanced account is intended to help the reader understand the how and the why of genetic engineering rather than make an argument for or against it. Charles saves his own ideas and opinions for the epilog. Two other thorough, recent primers on the subject are Bill Lambrecht's Dinner at the New Gene Cafe (LJ 8/01), which evenhandedly presents the pros and cons of the debate, and Alan McHughen's Pandora's Picnic Basket (LJ 8/00), which focuses more on biotechnology. From Scientific American
It was 1981, and California scientist Martin Apple was showing visitors his new, futuristic enterprise: the International Plant Research Institute, one of the world's first biotechnology companies devoted to agriculture. The biotech gold rush was just getting started, and Apple, talking about his plans to revolutionize agriculture, confided enthusiastically to a New York Times reporter, "We are going to make pork chops grow on trees!" "When that quote appeared in the newspaper Apple was mortified," writes Daniel Charles in Lords of the Harvest, his fascinating and thoroughly reported book about the science, business and politics of agricultural biotechnology. "He meant, of course, that engineered plants might produce the same nutrients that one finds in a pork chop, not an actual hunk of meat hanging on a tree. Besides which, as an observant Jew, he'd never touched a pork chop in his life." Apple even called the chairman of his board to see how they might get the Times to print a correction. "Don't worry about it," he told Apple. "It's great publicity." Ah, those were the days. The days before biotech crops were vilified as "Frankenfood." Before night raids on test plots of genetically modified trees. Before tortilla chips and corn muffins were tainted with gene-altered StarLink corn, approved only for animals because of human health concerns but inadvertently (and inevitably, critics would aver) homogenized into the human food supply soon after its introduction as cattle feed. It was a time so full of promise and unlimited potential that at Monsanto--the company that would later become the 800-pound gorilla of ag biotech but which was then an old-fashioned chemical giant just starting to experiment with genes--the main biotech research area on U Building's 4th floor had been nicknamed "U-4ia." It was also a difficult time of transition for the old-school Monsanto chemists and agricultural division reps, who felt threatened by the new laboratories full of red and white petunias--the plants that gene engineers were practicing on-and who expressed their fears as ridicule. At a Monsanto Christmas party in 1984, writes Charles in one of his numerous insider vignettes, one scientist brought a mocked-up picture of a petunia-leaf salad with the caption: "New Marketing Strategy: Eat More Petunias!" Most of all it was a time of discovery and intellectual adventure. Charles, a science reporter who has been a technology correspondent for National Public Radio and for New Scientist magazine, relates many of these adventures in wonderful detail. One of my favorites is the tale of how scientists invented a device resembling a BB gun that shot new genes into plants by blasting them with tiny DNA-coated tungsten pellets. Wearing white lab gowns and booties, they tested their invention by strafing onion after onion until the lab was reeking and dripping with onion puree. Their colleagues laughed, but it worked. So did a competing team's version, which used a 25,000-volt charge and some Mylar from a potato chip bag. Charles's descriptions of seed-company business deals sometimes left me a little confused, and at times his chronology of biotech's advancement got hard to track--an unavoidable shortcoming, perhaps, in a book organized (and rightly so) by topic instead of time. Laudably, however, and unlike many of the books already out on this subject, Lords is not a piece of political hatchetry bent on slicing and dicing biotech foods into Veg-O-Matic oblivion. Indeed, Charles is sympathetic to the industry side of the debate. A number of the scientists who gave birth to ag biotech were children of the sixties, he notes. Sure, they were arrogant as hell. But they really did believe that genetic technology might feed the world, clean the world, change the world. Yet Charles is not an apologist for Monsanto and the other corporate generals in the ag biotech business. He offers a collection of telling anecdotes that reveal the leading scientists and entrepreneurs in the industry as aggressive and even ruthless competitors who were not above stealing ideas and intellectual property from one another and who repeatedly put their own economic interests ahead of the world they had promised to save. On at least one occasion a scientist went so far as to aseptically shred documents received from a competing lab and to culture the bits of paper in petri dishes, hoping the paper might carry a few cells containing the competitor's valuable proprietary genes. Charles also subjects to rigorous analysis Monsanto's claim that its high-tech seeds are going to help poor farmers in the developing world and concludes along with the industry's opponents that, on the whole, the claim is false. In one enlightening chapter, Charles describes an extraordinary but little-known series of private retreats attended by high-ranking proponents and opponents in the early 1990s. Coordinated by Berlin sociologist Wolfgang van den Daele, the meetings helped to reveal what many had until then been unwilling to admit: the dispute over gene-altered food was about much more than human health and the environment; it was rooted in deeply conflicting views about democracy, capitalism and global trade. In the end, the meetings broke down, with industry claiming that opponents were unwilling to admit to having a larger revolutionary agenda and opponents claiming that industry was using those unresolvable issues to paper over biotech's problems immediately at hand. History, I suspect, will ultimately agree with Charles that in this respect both sides were right.

A wonderful storyteller, a thoughtful book
By Susan C. Hunnicutt
In the epilogue of Lords of the Harvest, Daniel Charles talks about the power of stories to illuminate, and also to obscure. He talks about the mythologies that drive agribusiness and other competing mythologies that drive it's opponents. He can stand at a distance from both kinds of stories, and reflect on how well they are illuminating and obscuring.
On the other hand, Daniel Charles is himself a great storyteller.
I appreciated the way Daniel Charles helped me to think about both these kinds of stories, and what they have to do with food and science, religious faith and moral values in the 21st century. Mostly, Charles stays very close to the "everyday stories of ordinary people," end of the spectrum. How he managed to get so close to the lives of these people is something I wonder about! People on both sides of this issue obviously trust him a great deal, or he would never have been able to write this book.
The "grand myths" he talks about in the epilogue, this was a very nice way to wrap it all up. Part of the difficulty of these issues is that there is no overarching spiritual/ ethical framework that can encompass this conversation. Just competing ideologies, and very little common ground. (Where common ground does exist, Charles is good at finding it.)
It irritates me when scientists who write about agribusiness and genetic engineering castigate others who don't have their scientific credentials for being "sentimental" or ignorant. They do this in a way that intimidates ordinary people who do not have Ph.Ds, as if you have to have a particular diploma to discuss these issues. We need to fight this kind of arrogance and parochialism. Science may be an elite field, but food belongs to everyone.
Daniel Charles makes the discussion accessible to everyday people who want to know what is happening to our food, and who are trying to understand why it is happening.

Great storytelling
By Malvin
Daniel Charles' "Lords of the Harvest" succeeds in bringing perspective to the biotech industry and the contentious issue of genetically modified food. The author does this by personalizing the protaganists at the heart of the story: the scientists who were driven mainly by the quest for knowledge and discovery; the businesspeople who sought dollar returns from their laboratory investments; and the environmentalists who felt that genetic engineering was simply the latest ugly manifestation of an out-of-control agribusiness industry. The result is a highly entertaining and readable book that should interest a wide audience.
The scientists who invented and nurtured the industry tend to get much better treatment from Charles than either the businesspeople or the environmentalists. As a former science reporter for NPR, Charles seems most comfortable painting psychological portraits of the researchers at Monsanto and elsewhere. Charles lovingly details the innovative and pioneering work that these scientists undertook and the intriguing problems they solved. Charles shows how these early projects gave shape to the modern biotech industry, and his writing in these sections is vivid and interesting. And in the chapter "Infinite Horizons", Charles enthuses about the potential of biotechnology to help solve the world's problems. Throughout, Charles' enthusiasm for science and biotechnology is unmistakable.
On the other hand, the businesspeople of biotech get beat up pretty badly in the book. You get the feeling that Charles seems slightly upset that big business can't figure out how to bring the benefits of painstaking scientific discovery to the people. Specifically, Charles relates the numerous and sometimes humorous mistakes made by executives at Monsanto and Calgene (the inventor of the ill-fated "Flavr Savr" tomato) in their quests to dominate their respective markets. Charles successfully uses these case studies to add color and context to the larger story that he is telling (for example, the author's profile of Monsanto CEO Robert Shapiro and his messianic-like appeal to the company's scientists to help save the world with biotechnology). Charles does an excellent job describing the corporate cultures and the motivations of key individuals, rendering his descriptions of the business wheeling-and-dealing that went on behind the scenes that much more interesting. However, I think that Charles is correct in concluding that it was the arrogance of Monsanto's top executives, more than any other single factor, that ultimately led to the company's demise and the public backlash against biotechnology.
Unfortunately, the environmentalists don't get treated much better. Although Charles appears to have abundantly interviewed scientists and businesspeople to gather original material for the book, it doesn't seem that he had much success contacting environmentalists; the profiles of well-known biotech opponents such as Jeremy Rifkin and Benny Sharlin appear to have been drawn from secondary sources. Consequently we don't enjoy the same level of insight regarding their motivations compared with the scientists. So although Charles does a respectable job of reporting why the environmentalists opposed biotech products and the actions that they took, the author's sympathies do not appear to lie with the environmentalists. Instead, Charles deftly swats aside several of the well-known studies that purport to show risks associated with genetically modified crops (such as Dr. Pusztai's rat and John Losey's Monarch butterfly studies). In fact, a certain level of hostility arises when the author makes the charge that environmentalists nevertheless publicized such "murky and ill-defined" (p. 208) studies purporting risk merely as a way to further their own agendas. But it does not seem to occur to Charles that many environmentalists might have organized the challenge to genetically modified food out of genuine concern for the welfare of consumers.
I also take slight issue with Charles on two other issues. First is his silence concerning regulation of the biotech industry. His techno-utopian bias leads him to claim that biotech is not substantially different compared with traditional plant and animal breeding practices, with the implication that the public should not be overly concerned about regulation of the industry. But the scientists' tools to recombine DNA in novel ways are so powerful and the effects are so little understood that it is not unreasonable to suggest that a greater level of corporate accountability should be required to ensure that the public interest is protected.
Second, Charles should have addressed the recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) controversy more adequately, given that this was a major Monsanto initiative (the heart of the book was about Monsanto and its scientists). His relative silence on this issue is defeaning: could it be that the environmentalists' charges about the risks of rBGH have at least some merit?
Still, I believe that Charles has done a good job of navigating some very tricky ideological terrain. "Lords of the Harvest" is probably as balanced a book on the subject of biotechnology as any other you'll likely find, and I highly recommend it.

Triumph: The Untold Story of Jesse Owens and Hitler's Olympics, by Jeremy Schaap

At the 1936 Olympics, against a backdrop of swastikas and goose-stepping storm troopers, an African-American son of sharecroppers won a staggering four gold medals and single-handedly demonstrated that Hitler’s myth of Aryan supremacy was a lie. The story of Jesse Owens at the Berlin games is that of an athletic performance that transcends sports. It is also the intimate and complex tale of one remarkable man's courage. Drawing on unprecedented access to the Owens family, previously unpublished interviews, and exhaustive archival research, Jeremy Schaap transports us to Germany and tells the dramatic tale of Owens and his fellow athletes at the contest dubbed the Nazi Olympics.

With his incisive reporting and rich storytelling, Schaap reveals what really happened over those tense, exhilarating weeks in a nuanced and riveting work of sports history.

From Publishers Weekly
Written as though the film treatment were already completed, Schaap's chronicle of Jesse Owens's journey to and glorious triumph at the 1936 Berlin Olympics is snappy and dramatic, with an eye for the rousing climax, through curiously slight on follow-through. Starting with Owens as the well-feted ex-athlete in the 1950s, Schaap (an ESPN anchor and author of Cinderella Man) flashes back to Owens's childhood in 1920s Cleveland, where junior high coach Charles Riley spotted his astounding physique and near limitless potential for track and field. Owens seems so perfectly made for running and jumping that the following years of ever-increasing athletic and popular success are less exciting than preordained. By the time the "Ebony Antelope" (as one of many adoring newspapermen had anointed him) was ready for Berlin, his success was practically guaranteed. The real drama of Schaap's book, which surprisingly skimps on Owens the person, comes in the politically fractious runup to Berlin (for the ceremony-obsessed Hitler, "a fascist fantasy come true"). While the story has been told many times, Schaap makes good use of his prodigious research and access to the Owens family, even digging up the fact that Owens's oft-repeated claim he was snubbed by Hitler and the Berlin crowd was very likely untrue. Excellent book on Jesse Owens
By LSmith
The accomplishments of Jesse Owens in the 1936 Summer Olympics is still revered and celebrated now, eighty years later. Not just for the athletic achievement of earning four gold medals, but also for dispelling the myth of Adolf Hitler’s notion of Aryan superiority is this feat remembered. In this excellent book by Jeremy Schapp, the reader will learn more about what made a humble black man from Ohio turn into the fastest man on Earth.

There are many aspects about Owen’s story that Schapp writes about beyond the wins on the track. From the coaching of Larry Snyder at Ohio State to the story about how Owens became one of the members of the 4 x 100-yard relay team to the alleged “snub” by Hitler after Owns won his first medal, there are many different subplots that are recalled in great detail. The story of the “snub” is very interesting in that the myth is dispelled by Owens himself by recalling that Hitler waved at him after his first medal. It was only later during the lecture circuit did the story of the snub become well known.

Not everything written is about Owens, either. Schapp wrote very good pieces about filmmaker Leni Reifenstahl, the American boycott of the games that almost happened and the controversy about leaving the two American Jewish runners off of the relay team in which Owens replaced one of them and won his fourth medal. Avery Brundage is also prominently portrayed in the book. These and other aspects of the 1936 Olympics make the book complete and an excellent source of information on this topic.

The only thing that could have made this better would have been a little more coverage of life after the Olympics for Owens as the book does not make it clear what really became of Owens after that historic event. But if the reader wants to learn about the Jesse Owens story of how he became a person who singlehandedly dispelled a dictator’s vision of domination through the simple acts of running and jumping, then this is the book to read.

Triumph: The untold story of Jesse Owens and Olympic Hero
By Sylva
This book was very well written and showed many of the challenges we face daily in our lives, but it is amazing that someone saw his talent, gave up many hours to help him develop it to be the amazing athlete that Jesse become. I feel credit must be given to his parents and a loving wife who basically gave up hours, then years while his abilities were being developed.

I love the way he desired to have schooling and care for his small family. So many sacrifices were made in his life and then you think of of the mental anguish of the prejudice against his race, this was a time when people did not respect a person for their talents, abilities and kindness. There were others in our society who were disregarded because of birth defects who did not have a fair chance in life.

Jesse Owens and his coach were heroes for being able to overcome and give it all they had to develop the talents and opportunities for him to find a place on the Olympic team for the USA. Then to arrive and find the social beliefs of Hitler were even worse, but he endured and gave his all. I was touched by the friendship he developed with the Luz Long which endured for years after the Olympics. This book is well worth reading because of the basic values it teaches, that many of us have seen in our own lives in a different manor.

A fascinating story and tribute to one of America's legendary athletes.
By Norman Jones
If you are interested in learning about the behind the scenes happenings when Jesse Owens won four gold medals in front of a stunned Adolph Hitler then read this book. The book is about Jesse and the things that happened to him on the way to being the world's fastest human. It is a well written account. My view is it should be required reading in all public schools as the events described in this book are so much a part of history. Perhaps the most astonishing thing in the book is to learn about how Jesse Owens was discriminated against when he returned from the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. He attended Ohio State and could not stay in the dorms on campus and eat in many restaurants in the area. In those he could find meals he often had to go in the back door and dine away from white people. What a way to treat one of America's most famous athletes. Norman Jones, Ed.
