About the Author
Michael Hughes, after working in radio and television (as an announcer, cameraman, and floor director), started a corporate audio visual business that specializes in training and marketing videos for businesses. His clients include the governments of Canada and British Columbia, B.C.'s telephone company, the natural gas company, several sawmills, and many other companies both large and small. He does most of the technical work himself, hiring crew as needed. He became the teaching assistant for his father's "Introduction to Filmmaking" course in 1972 (16mm film). After two semesters, Mike took over the course and has been teaching filmmaking ever since – as well as continuing his corporate video company.

Misleading title and outdated contents

Whenever I order a book on a fast-evolving topic (e.g. "Digital Filmmaking") I always check the publication date to make sure I am not buying an outdated text. Unfortunately, with this book I got cheated anyway.

The author has a friendly style and is undoubtedly knowledgeable on the topic of television and film production, with long experience. However he offers an an overview of analog and television equipment and stops at digital tape based formats such as DVCPRO and Digi Beta. These formats were introduced in the early 1990s, and are by now obsolete. No word about tapeless or video DSLR equipment. This is not usable information for somebody who is a beginner in digital filmmaking; this is a nostalgic lesson in TV equipment history.

Secondly, each and every topic in the book takes 2-3 paragraphs. There is no practical advice found inside - unless suggesting that you edit your own video and write your own music counts as practical. Reading this whole book may make you knowledgeable enough to know when to nod while listening to a conversation about video production, but only if you have had absolutely no prior knowledge on the matter.

In my opinion, a "practical guide" is supposed to teach you certain skills and offer you some advice on a particular topic. For example, buy this or that piece of equipment, get this or that piece of software and try to do this and that with it. Buy you will not find such advice in this book. The information is so generic so as to be useless. And as I said before, it is hopelessly outdated.

This book may have been published in 2012 but has been written not later than 2002. I cannot imagine anybody who would qualify as a beginner in digital production today and would benefit from reading this book.

Do not buy this book.

Digital Filmmaking for Beginners

I am writing regarding Mike's Digital Video Production for Beginners. I have read his book and found it to be very clear and easy to understand. He covers every detail in the production process and I anxiously anticipated his personal sense of humour, making this book easy to read.

The book covers everything from the creative side of scripting, technical details, shooting formats, and editing. Mike leaves nothing out!

I especially liked the pictures and the numbered diagrams for the digital editing process. Mike makes several suggestions as to software products that might work for me. The book helped me to narrow the field on appropriate equipment as well. I also found that learning the 'lingo' of the Video Production business would be helpful when applying for work in this creative business.

His "step by step", made it easy to understand. I can hardly wait to get started with my first production!

Digital Filmmaking for Beginners

I have read Digital Filmmaking for Beginners by Michael Hughes and I'd like to say I loved it. I've read many books aimed at beginners and I must say, I liked this one because of Mr. Hughes' simple, unpretentious and straightforward style. He sounds like a real person yet, you can tell without reading too far behind the lines that he knows his stuff.

And speaking of beginners, what I liked best is that this book is aimed right at the beginner. It assumes you know little or nothing and goes from there. That's important because beginners today may be young people who probably haven't a clue how today's digital recording technology evolved from the old tech stuff. That's helpful as I've often wondered where many techniques being practiced today came from.

And if you are beyond an absolute novice, this is still great because he sends you to a website where you can get excellent updates and advanced tips to learn even more.

Overall, an easy read, just the right level of detail, well worth the money.

Analog Design for CMOS VLSI Systems is a comprehensive text that offers a detailed study of the background principles and the analog design techniques for CMOS-VLSI implementation. The book covers the physical operation and the modelling of MOS transistors. Discusses the key features of integrated passive components and studies basic building blocks and voltage and current references before considering in great details the design of op-amps and comparators.

The book is primarily intended for use as a graduate-level textbook and for practising engineers. It is expected that the reader should be familiar with the concepts taught in basic introductory courses in analog circuits. Relying on that proper background knowledge the book presents the material on an intuitive basis with a minimum use of mathematical quantitative analysis. Therefore, the insight induced by the book will favour that kind of knowledge gathering required for the design of high-performance analog circuits. The book favours this important process with a number of inserts providing hints or advises on key features of the topic studied.

An interesting peculiarity of the book is the use of numbers. The equations describing the circuit operation are guidelines for the designer. It is important to assess performances in a quantitative way. To achieve this target the book provides a number of examples on computer simulations using Spice. Good tips

This might not be among the most comprehensive books out there dealing with analog design but, here the author includes something that many don't - he gives design tips. It is good once in a while being reminded about what is important. However, a big minus in this book is the language. I understand that the author is not a native English speaker but, Kluwer must have done something about it. It seems as though they just took the manuscript and printed it without reading/correcting it - which is a pity because their books are expensive, and in this case one wonders about where the quality is vis-à-vis the price. Well, for me, I frequently needed to read the text more than once to understand what the author is trying to convey. But this flaw is not related to the technical content of the book. The author's experience in the field is reflected in the technical details.

Clean exposition of CMOS circuit design

I happened across this book at the local engineering library while looking for books to brush up on CMOS design. This was my favorite of several books I checked out. Professor Maloberti has taught a CMOS class in Italy for many years, and this is essentially the text of his course. The explanation in the book bears the marks of someone who has explained the topic many times and revised his explanation so that only the important parts remain and are presented in logical sequence. It is not an enclopedia of CMOS layout and circuits, like Baker's two books. It covers fewer topics but goes into more depth on each one.
The level is that of a first semester graduate course in CMOS, not for absolute beginners, but anyone with undergrad courses in electronics (like Sedra and Smith) ought to be able to follow Maloberti without a problem. The explanations are both quantitative and qualitative. He develops equations but also explains circuit behavior from an intuitive point of view. Even circuit topologies that are not obvious at first glance, like the folded cascode, become clear after Maloberti takes you through the predessor circuits.
He has quite a few examples conducted in Spice throughout the text. I find the examples are quite helpful both in gaining insight into how to similate CMOS circuits, and in getting calibrated on realistic circuit behavior. Although it is not a book on layout, he does give quite a few examples of representative layouts for different circuit elements and topologies.
The only reason I don't give it five stars is that English is obviously a second language for the author. Sometimes the English gets in the way of the exposition. However, if you stop and think for a minute, the context almost always makes clear what he is saying. Kluwer could have fixed this easily by having a native speaker edit the text. Perhaps they will in a future edition.
Overall, I highly recommend Maloberti as an introduction and reference text on CMOS. I think it is the one I will keep coming back to for reference in future design.

Clear and well-organized

Witulski's review is right on the money. The English is odd, but mostly it just makes reading it more fun. Exposition is clearer than a great many texts. At the level of Razavi "Design of Analog CMOS Integrated Circuits". Format is like a text book, with good figures and fonts, and text inserts to emphasize points: not the usual Kluwer kludge.

Disappointing

This book was a disappointment. It doesn't even come close to describing modern debuggers. I'm still waiting for a good book to be published on debuggers.

Superficial, Short: Skip it!

I recall the time, as I worked on a large parallel Unix debugger, and only slowly collected facts and scraps of necessary knowledge to progress. I always wondered, why not a single book was written, which would be solely devoted to the architecture, design and implementation of symbolic debuggers?

As I saw this book announced, my expectations were high. Could this be a help in organizing my knowledge about debuggers, collected so far from semi confidential industry reports or white papers, 3-4 dissertations, several implementations, plus some 10-15 conference papers with vague descriptions of implementations, claims of spectacular achievements or with mere theoretical ideas?

No, unfortunately this is not so. This book, or rather "a booklet" is very incomplete. It literally did not told me any single detail which I would not have known already. For example, missing is the description of the very standard Unix interface to control and hold a process. Since this is not a scientific book providing more generic foundations about process tracing (such as tracking of very long time running programs, replay techniques, generating snapshots etc. etc.) than I would at least expect a solid practice orientation. This should include a complete discussion of several assemblers and typical architectures, because they provide sometimes completely different means of implementing breakpoints, watchpoints or of support for threads. In many cases a debugger must be, or can be supported by a cooperating compiler. Several interesting ideas have been implemented in the back ends, which may greatly help supporting breakpoints, finding function prologues, dealing with exceptions and asynchronous signals. I also miss the specifications and a good comparison of the two most common formats holding symbolic information, Stabs and DWARF! Etc. etc., this list of missing facts and issues could go on and on.

Usually I call a book like this one "a blah blah novel." The author claims "I know something, but I will not tell what is it." Yes, there are debuggers, yes we can program them but a lot of code is necessary to do so, yes we can stop a process and advance it instruction by instruction. Yes, yes, I know all that.

I think that will have to keep waiting for a serious book about symbolic debugging! Any takers? If I only could write well...

Good if you are only interested in theory and not practice

I have to disagree with the author. The purpose of learning about writing a debugger is to "write a debugger". Because there aren't *any* other books with practical code and examples, the author missed a golden opportunity to fill a gap.
My Win32 debugger has less than 200 lines of source code, so the assertion that debugger code is long and complex is completely false. The "concept" of debugging is a complex one, but the source code is not.
That's not to say that the book is completely useless. Some of the advice given in the book can not be found in any other resource. And without it, it probably would have taken me much longer to write my debugger. Writing a debugger is not as easy as writing any other kind of program, so the concepts covered in the book are important.
If you are interested in writing a Win32 debugger, my suggestion would be to get this book, but supplement it with an MSDN subscription (either online or on CDROM) and get the Microsoft Systems Journal CDROM with back-issues. With these three resources (and a LOT of patience) you'll be able to get your Win32 debugger up and running.

Great, but outdated

I'm still looking for a more recent book like this. There's a lot of useful learning-curve information, but you better be technically savvy and already an experienced Linux user. It's not for Newbies unless you come from another similar technology, such as the Windows world, or Networking. Otherwise, there's way too much under the hood you'll have to just take on faith. The book makes it seem easy, but unfortunately, there's some roadblocks with later OS's. You'll need to use older distros to make all these examples work as is.

There's also a void where it could explain how to correctly add an app server to the KDC. There's so little info there that I had to resort to Google. I was totally confused between using DNS and Kadmin to manage principles.

Anyway, the book helped me a lot, it just wasn't all I needed. Outside research and translations are needed by now.

Will Get You Up and Running (1stEd)

First I would like to justify my 5 star rating. This book helped me out of a nasty multi-homed host and DNS problem when no other source could. Without this book I would have been troubleshooting this issue for days. I feel the book has paid for itself.

However, I wouldn't consider this "The Definitive Guide." It lacks documentation on the krb5.conf configuration file. I found myself referencing the krb5.conf(5) man page for additional info. Also, the documentation that comes with Heimdal is a very good good source for configuration settings.

Another deficiency is the GSSAPI coverage. I did have some trouble setting up my GSSAPI aware SSH with Kerberos. I found myself digging through the ssh man pages and doing some trial and error. Chapter 7 discusses Kerberos enabled applications. SSH is covered there, but I felt the GSSAPI aspect was lacking. Although the author mentions that GSSAPI is not specific to any authentication method and is somewhat out of place in a Kerberos book, I feel this is where the author could have went the extra mile and claimed the right to the title "The Definitive Guide." There are many Kerberized applications today not mentioned in Chapter 7. It would be nice to see a second edition that covers them.

What this book has that you will not find in any other single source is comprehensive coverage of the history, protocols, and implementation of Kerberos complete with diagrams. From a security standpoint, this will really help you understand what is going on in your network. For example, when setting up my firewall rules and NIDS, I really had a grasp on what traffic was going where and what needed to be blocked/detected.

Chapter 6, Security, is very comprehensive and outlines various root compromises, dictionary and brute-force, replay, and man-in-the-middle attacks. It also details the importance of pre-authentication in Kerberos V as well as best practices to protect your key distribution center (KDC).

My Kerberos network is a 10 host homogeneous OpenBSD network running the Heimdal Kerberos V version 0.7.2. Although this book covers the older Heimdal 0.6, it was still very relevant. It also covers the MIT 1.3 implementation (MIT is currently at version 1.6.3). Although this book was published in 2003, it is still worth its price brand new in 2008.

Good technical overview of Kerberos

This book is a rather complete technical overview of Kerberos. It starts with a technical overview, which is a big must to be able to configure and debug a Kerberos system. It then jumps to implementation and then ends with integration.

The overview is rather short, but was sufficient to help me install successfully a Heimdal system on my BSD network. I would have like more informations on how to integrate Windows Vista and XP to Heimdal, but the book falls short on this.

Overall, I strongly recommend this book to anyone who needs to install quickly and maintain a Kerberos system. No quick tutorial would be enough and �Kerberos: The Definitive Guides� makes it as short as can be.

The Papacy in the Age of Totalitarianism, 1914-1958 examines the most momentous years in papal history. Popes Benedict XV (1914-1922), Pius XI (1922-1939), and Pius XII (1939-1958) faced the challenges of two world wars and the Cold War, and threats posed by totalitarian dictatorships like Italian Fascism, German National Socialism, and Communism in Russia and China. The wars imposed enormous strains upon the unity of Catholics and the hostility of the totalitarian regimes to Catholicism lead to the Church facing persecution and martyrdom on a scale similar to that experienced under the Roman Empire and following the French Revolution.

At the same time, these were years of growth, development, and success for the papacy. Benedict healed the wounds left by the 'modernist' witch hunt of his predecessor and re-established the papacy as an influence in international affairs through his peace diplomacy during the First World War. Pius XI resolved the 'Roman Question' with Italy and put papal finances on a sounder footing. He also helped reconcile the Catholic Church and science by establishing the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and took the first steps to move the Church away from entrenched anti-Semitism. Pius XI continued his predecessor's policy of the 'indigenisation' of the missionary churches in preparation for de-colonisation. Pius XII fully embraced the media and other means of publicity, and with his infallible promulgation of the Assumption in 1950, he took papal absolutism and centralism to such heights that he has been called the 'last real pope'. Ironically, he also prepared the way for the Second Vatican Council.

Great Read

It is hard to write a small review. I can't put 100 pages of notes on this book. It is a book to help anyone understand how capital works. Volume two is more about the circulation process. Please read it and don't quit after chapter 3. It is a long book and it is somewhat complicated. David Harvey has written a companion to the book as well as he does a extensive reading of the book that is offered online for free. It can be obtained through Itunes and his website, davidharvey.org. You must read this book to understand a whole different form of thinking. Also for a thorough understanding of this book try to read Alexander Kojeve, Introduction to the Reading of Hegel: Lectures on Phenomenology of Spirit for a deep understanding of Marxism through a lens of Hegelian thought, Hegel was a teacher of Marx and Mar was a Hegelian thinker. If you are a historian you need to read Marx's work in order to be a better historian.

Surprise!

This book surprised me. I expected a dry, boring, difficult tome that would not interest me in the long run. I was (mostly) wrong. Although some of it is quite tedious, some a bit repetitive, and parts that are incomprehensible,there are long stretches -- especially of the historical parts -- that are fascinating and read very well.

I loved reading Chapter 10, On the Working Day. That's where we learn for sure that time is money, and the struggle for limits to the working day are the crux of the class struggle (still going on with hassles over vacation and sick leave, for example). It is the worker's time that gives value to the commodity, and the endless accumulation of commodities is what capitalism is about. I also liked Chapter 15, on Machinery and Large-Scale Industry (in large part because technological history is something that interests me anyhow). And all of Part 8, "So-Called Primitive Accumulation," was fascinating. That is where we see the ultimate contradiction of Capitalism, its dependence on perpetually accumulating more, compounded annually, forever. Such endless growth comes largely from dispossessing others of what they already had, and endless exploitation of the earth's resources, ad infinitum.

David Harvey, who has taught Capital Volume 1 at City University of New York for many years said that he has considered teaching the course backwards, beginning at the end with Part 8 so that the students would have the historical context before going into the technical parts. I think I could also recommend that anyone undertaking Capital to read Part 8 first. It will surprise you what a really good writer Marx was, when he wanted to be.

It takes a lot of guts to launch into a thousand page tome, written 150 years ago on one of the driest, most dismal of all subjects: political economy. It is for that reason that I used the free on-line lecture series by David Harvey from his course on Marx at City University of New York, and used it as my guide as I went through the book. Without such a guide, I probably wouldn't have tackled it but with the guide it is more than worth the effort. Buy the Penguin Classics edition of Capital and download the lectures, one at a time and when you are finished you will be far better educated than you are now!

Beware of the Kindle Edition

The Kindle edition is garbled. Random chunks of text are just missing, so that half of one sentence gets joined with half of another sentence. The result is to make a difficult text impossible. Penguin should be ashamed to have their company name associated with such a shoddy product.
