Great Book on Distributed Systems

This book is a little more expensive than most of the flashy Web Services books these days but it is well worth the money. Set in small font and not wasting pages on chapters like "History of XML and SOAP" this book is dense in content on the architecture of distributed systems, including Web Services. We get to learn about the issues of distributed transactions and the differences between conversations, coordination and orchestration. The text is precise but nevertheless easy to follow. One of the best books I have seen on Web Services architecture.

Clear explanations, good fundamentals

I am using this book for a graduate level class about Web Services. I like the books approach on giving you enough background about middle-ware evolution that makes it easier to understand what Web Services are trying to accomplish. Given that the actual technology (implementation details) change so much in this area the books approach makes a lot of sense. I also found explanations to be concise and clear.

Advice: if you are looking for a hands-on how-to book about XML this is not the book to pick up. Otherwise, if you are looking for a good fundamentals book that will help you paint a big picture of Web Services this book is great!

Poor Quality Kindle Edition

The quality of the Kindle version of this book is very poor. It looks as if one is reading a poor quality scan rather than rendered text. The type face is very light and jagged. Worse still, are the whitespace breaks between letters within words. It's like reading code rather than prose. Unfortunately, I didn't start reading the book until well after the seven day return policy and now I'm stuck with it but, don't you get stuck with it. If you want this book, get the hard copy and avoid the Kindle version at all cost.

Interesting read....from a manager's viewpoint, not from an engineer's

In a very easy-to-read book, Birla uses his vast experience in FedEx to outline how the philosophy of FedEx evolved and thrives on innovation. The vantage point enjoyed by the author certainly reflects in this "big picture" viewpoint of one of the better known company's growth. Of particular interest is the notion of innovation ( spelt with an "i") dealing with process improvements and Innovation (spelt with an "I") dealing with business model changes. The author provides an interesting discussion on what constitutes innovation and how FedEx defined (or didnt define) it. The rest of the book explains how a 5-dimensional employee base can be created. This discussion is certainly novel and adds some interesting perspective for anyone involved in managing people and/or processes.

Though the book will certainly please any "managerial-type" reader, I was a bit disappointed to see that the author's vast engineering experience was essentially untapped in this book. There is no meaningful discussion on the operational side of "how " FedEx actually implemented innovation....In that sense, the title is a little misleading for an engineering-minded reader. Regardless, this is an excellent read, provides a different perspective on how innovation should be seen, and a broad paradigm that enables developing an employee-base committed to and thriving on innovation. A good read. (It may be interesting to read this book along with the autobiography of Kinko's founder - "Copy This!". FedEx's buying of Kinkos is discussed in this book and for even a casual observer the synergy between these two companies seems real.)

A must read, the book is more than just about FedEx

There is not a manager or executive throughout the world who would not benefit greatly from reading this book. In only 200 pages Madan captures the very essence of what is needed by any business in order to survive and thrive in today's economy.

Through the story of FedEx he both illustrates why companies need to engender a culture of innovation and, also sets out exactly what is needed to execute on that strategy. Any negativity on the part of a reader will have more to do with their own personal doubts or fear of failure, for the ideas are sound and well illustrated.

In the work I do I spend a lot of time reading management and success books, this is one of the best that I have read in a very long time. The linkage between Strategy, People, Process and Systems is as strong as I have ever seen.

Author Madan Birla spent 22 years with FedEx, watching its culture of innovation develop as it applied new ideas in the marketplace. Birla's fluid writing style and his first-hand observations and insights make this an exceptional corporate story. He knows the people who built FedEx at all levels, from delivery drivers to CEO Frederick Smith. Birla focuses his book on how FedEx became a leading innovator and reshaped the global airfreight business. While many corporations give lip service to innovation and employee development, Birla says FedEx delivers the real thing, and he provides rare specifics as he shows companies in other industries how they can replicate FedEx's successes. A Very Useful and Practical Book

I found this book to be very helpful in gaining insight into my personal struggles. Charles Stanley describes several reasons why God allows us to face adversity. Sometimes it is a consequence for our sin, or just the bad outcome of a fallen world, but in every case God uses the adversity to shape us toward His design for us. Adversity may even be a reason to feel hopeful, as it is in adversity that we learn to trust God the most and become more conformed to the image of Christ. Adversity can even be a blessing, in that it curbs our worldly pride and contentment, and keeps us focused on our dependence on God.

This is a nice compact book which is handy to carry along as you go through your day, or give as a gift. The chapters are short and succinct, and can be read in one sitting. This would be a good book to keep with your Bible as a study guide, or to reread various chapters as you face daily challenges. Charles Stanley's writing is very engaging and interesting, and concepts are expressed very clearly. Highly recommended.

In this 1976 volume, divided into two sections, Wiesenthal tackles the question of the possibilities and limits of forgiveness. The first part relates the story of how Wiesenthal, as a prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp, was brought before a dying SS trooper, who explained his actions and asked for forgiveness, which Wiesenthal could not bring himself to bestow. In the second section, Wiesenthal presents the story to an array of leading intellectuals and asks, "What would you have done?" I think in Christian theology there is a difference between human forgiveness and Divine absolution.
Only God can provide absolution because only God actually knows the heart - whether the person has truly repented or not.
What we are asked to do when told to forgive seventy times seven, I think, is to let go of the anger, hurt, and desire for revenge and give it to God. At that point, we can also receive healing from God - which may take some time to truly absorb. Then we are told to pray for those who have hurt us.

Thought provoking

[The Sunflower : On the Possibilities and Limits of Forgiveness] by [Simon Wiesenthal] was a simply tender and thought provoking book. Simon Wiesenthal (famous Nazi-hunter) spent time in Auschwitz and Mauthusen before being liberated. While at Auschwitz he was sent to the hospital bed of a young, dying SS officer. This officer asked Wiesenthal to forgive him, although they personally had no contact with each other. The SS officer needed to be forgiven before he died. Wiesenthal did not forgive him, by keeping his silence. This young, 22 year old SS officer also gave Wiesenthal his mother's address and wanted him to tell his mother that he loved her. This always haunted Wiesenthal and years later he writes about it. Was it his place to forgive this Nazi for all Jewry? Did he have the authority or the right to do so? He visited the mother 4 years after the war and again, kept silent when the mother said, "He (SS officer) was such a good son." Again, Wiesenthal has pangs of conscience. The answer is never resolved. The second half of the book are the opinions of theologians and other philosophers on what they would have done in Wiesenthal's situation. Very interesting reading.

Would you forgive the Nazi perpetrator? The Sunflower by Simon Wiesenthal

The Sunflower is a philosophical narrative about moral responsibility and the possibility—and limits--of forgiveness of genocide. In this parable, the narrator describes his hellish daily existence in the Lemberg concentration camp. The story reflects, in some respects, Wiesenthal’s own experience in several Nazi concentration camps during WWII: including Janowska, Plaszow and Mauthausen. Although the narrative shies away from vivid descriptions of violence, it alludes to the sadistic mistreatment of Jewish inmates by SS officers as well as to the starvation, disease and constant threat of being shot or selected for the crematorium that were part and parcel of the daily horrors experienced by inmates. The book, originally published by Schocken Books in 1976, has been taught for decades in schools as an introduction to the Holocaust. Written in a simple yet elegant prose, The Sunflower has been especially popular because it raises the important questions about moral responsibility for national crimes and explores the victims’ capacity for forgiveness. The latter point was particularly relevant to Wiesenthal, who spent years of his life tracking down Nazi fugitives and bringing them to trial for their crimes against humanity.
In a moment of rare beauty in his somber existence in the concentration camp, the narrator, a Jewish prisoner on his way to forced labor, sees a row of sunflowers planted on Christian soldiers’ graves. In a poetic scene, the narrator describes how he’s initially enthralled by the flowers’ beauty, only to be later struck by its implications: “I stared spellbound. The flower heads seemed to absorb the sun’s rays like mirrors and draw them down into the darkness of the ground as my gaze wandered from the sunflower to the grave… It was gaily colored and butterflies fluttered from flower to flower. … Were they whispering something to each flower to pass on to the soldier below? Yes, this was just what they were doing; the dead were receiving light and messages” (The Sunflower, Simon Wiesenthal, New York: Schocken Books, 1998, 14). As he overcomes his awe, he realizes that, as a Jewish prisoner, he’ll be deprived of dignity not only in life, but also in death. He’ll be shot and tossed into a mass grave or gassed and incinerated. For him, as for millions of other Jewish prisoners, “No sunflower would ever bring light into my darkness, and no butterflies would dance above my dreadful tomb” (15).
When the narrator arrives at work, where he’s charged with throwing away medical waste, a nurse signals him to follow her to a hospital bed. There the narrator sees a man enveloped in bandages, pale and rail thin. As this man addresses him with great difficulty, the narrator realizes that the dying man is a young German SS officer: a mortal enemy. Astonishingly enough, the officer begs for his forgiveness for what he’s done to other Jewish people. He doesn’t excuse his behavior, but he describes some of its causes. He tells him about the Nazi indoctrination when he was in Hitler Youth. He speaks of the manuscripts and speeches that depicted Jews as a “subhuman race” and called for their annihilation, which he later encountered in his training as an SS officer. He also speaks of being subjected to tremendous peer pressure from fellow soldiers as well yielding to the pressure of following orders from his superiors.
And yet, now that he’s about to die, he feels a sense of responsibility and guilt for his murderous acts against defenseless civilians. He confesses that he was part of an SS brigade that hunted Jews down, forced dozens of them—defenseless men, women and children--into a house, then tossed hand grenades into the windows to kill all of them. Some people jumped, while on fire, from the broken windows. Still haunted by this vivid memory, the SS soldier can’t expire in peace without some kind of atonement from a Jew: from a member of the group he and other soldiers victimized. The narrator is surprised by the request and paralyzed by indecision. He doesn’t know how to respond.
When he returns to the camp that evening, he tells his friends about this strange encounter. Adam, an architect, finds the SS soldier’s request preposterous—and trivial—given that the Nazis were murdering millions of Jews. One less Nazi, he states cynically. Josek, a deeply religious Jew, maintains that he’d have refused the pardon with a clear conscience. How could his friend have forgiven atrocities of such a magnitude? And who was he to speak for millions of other victims? Both friends remain suspicious: Why would the “Aryan Superman” need the forgiveness of an “inferior” Jew? The narrator, however, sees the dying SS soldier as a fellow human being. “The SS man’s attitude toward me was not that of an arrogant superman. Probably I hadn’t successfully conveyed all my feelings: a subhuman condemned to death at the bedside of an SS man condemned to death…” (67). Of course, their circumstances were far from symmetrical. In fact, they were diametrically opposed. Still unsure of his own ethical stance, the narrator asks each of us, readers, to ask ourselves: If faced with the Nazi soldier’s dying request for forgiveness, “What would I have done?” (98)
If we read the transcripts of the Nazi leaders put on trial, we see that this question of forgiveness doesn’t come up often for the perpetrators: at least not in the public trials. Adolf Eichmann or Rudolf Hoss, for instance, express no regret or compunction for their crimes. They deny all sense of personal responsibility and blame only the Nazi system and their superiors for their murderous deeds. Yet for the victims, the question is extremely relevant because it asks them to consider at least some of the perpetrators as human: as men capable of guilt and regret for their crimes.
Wiesenthal’s simple moral parable shows the Nazis as a diverse group who nevertheless behaved the same way. Not every SS soldier hated Jews. Not every SS soldier was a ruthless sadist. Not every SS soldier gladly followed orders to butcher innocent people. Yet almost every SS soldier chose, like the man in The Sunflower, to follow such orders, to commit such crimes. Almost every SS soldier killed countless innocent Jews. How could this happen? Understanding what forces were at play to make genocide possible doesn’t mean forgiving perpetrators or exonerating them of blame. But without a sociological, and historical, understanding of how tens of thousands of German citizens—some of whom were ordinary men, like the soldier in this story--were capable of such atrocities, we are likely to overlook the vulnerability of our own times.

Immediate disappointment. More does not mean better

I was given this book as a birthday present as I have a love for Mandalas and for colouring. When I unwrapped my gift I was so happy when I saw the cover. It was so beautiful and because of this I felt very excited about what I was going to find inside. I have had other mandala colouring books (read my other reviews by clicking on my name to see the other mandala book I loved so much).

Inside the book I was filled with immediate disappointment. The drawings were bland and uninspiring. It felt like a money making book instead of a book produced by someone with a love for Mandalas. So many of the mandalas were so tiny that I couldn't see a way of colouring them even with sharpened pencils or tiny nibbed fineliners. Worse than this was the fact that a lot of the drawings were almost identical and some had almost no detail leaving just lots of white space.

In being polite I said thank you to the person that gave me the book but I will not be using it and I dislike it so much that I wouldn't even consider giving it to someone else as a gift. There are plenty of Mandala coloring books out there. More does not mean better. I suggest if you are thinking of buying such a book to look inside (Amazon feature) and to read the reviews before buying.

I like collections of things so obviously I get every book in a series that is why I purchased this one. It's not as good as the1st one but it's still good. These are smaller books with tons of designs. Nice thick pages, one sided. If you like mandala, I say buy these 2.

Mandalas?

I am disappointed with this. None of the images look anywhere close to the image on the cover, in fact, the images in the book look more like kaleidoscope images than mandalas to me. Also, the book is really thick which is great if you want a large quantity of pictures to color, but not so great if you want to color the pages without tearing them out first. It's awkward and difficult to color in such a thick book.

Genuine classic

I rarely give 5 stars but this deserves every one.

The book begins with Pope's friendship with Ishi, 'the last wild indian' who taught him archery and hunting. He then covers his own experimentation with various types of genuine traditional bows, settling on the English Long Bow as his bow of choice. He goes into some detail on how to craft a bow and arrow before describing in vivid detail how to and his experience hunting various animals across North America.

Pope has a technical mind but with an obvious romantic bent which is reflected in his writing. He is rarely obnoxious and often humble, often humorous and always enjoyable to read. All his chapters are well titled as well, so you can easily skip anything you're not interested in (I skipped a lot of technical advice).

This is a genuine classic and well worth your time if you have an interest in the outdoors or archery more specifically. The price is rather low as well!

wonderful history

This book is a great book for those who are into traditional archery. It gives us a great insight into the life of Ishi, the last wild American Indian. It gives us insight into the archery world before the invention of the compound bow and of making your own equipment. That is why I really enjoyed this book.

A True Pioneer of Archery

I remember when I was younger reading this book and how it gave so many dreams and ideas to fill my head. It was writen in an easy to read style and went into detail on many things. I especially like the part about the equipment he used and his intermost feelings of the accomplishment he felt when seeing the fruits of his labor pay off. This is not a book to be passed by an aspiring archer because it will relate to the reader the person true love and devotion to the sport of archery and the abundance of a sense of accomplishment to be garnered from the actually doing. This is my fourth time reading the book and still I find little bits of the man and his thoughts on the subject. Saxton Pope along with Art Young were truly pioneers in Archery, along with others, and offer us a window back to when it was a simplier time, but most of which can still apply today. I would reccomend this book to anyone who would, perhaps like to get a sense of the Archery History.

Timber Timmy's love of wood

This book has transformed my life. I used to know people, but now I just hanker for the feel of wood and all the comfort that it offers. I am currently deep in the forest whittling myself a new wife after my last one was eaten by a bear. This book taught me how to live life to the full. I love wood.
