In this book, Coping with Difficult People Workbook, we teach a specific model that participants can use to build positive relationships with difficult people.

Each chapter of this workbook begins with an annotated Table of Contents with notes and examples for the facilitator. Each chapter contains two primary elements:

1) A set of assessments to help participants gather information about themselves in a focused situation,and

2) A set of guided self-exploration activities to help participants process information and learn effective ways of coping with the difficult people they encounter.

About the Author
John J. Liptak, EdD, frequently conducts workshops on assessment-related topics. He has written three books on career-related topics and these books have been featured in numerous newspapers including The Washington Post and The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. His work has also been featured on MSNBC, CNN Radio and on the PAX / ION television series, Success without a College Degree. John has many years of experience in providing counseling services to individuals and groups in a variety of settings including job training programs, correctional institutions, and colleges and universities. In addition, John has about ten years of teaching experience as an assistant professor. With Kathy Khalsa and Ester Leutenberg, he has written three other comprehensive books for teachers and counselors to use with their students and clients: The Self-Esteem Program, The Social Skills Program and The Stress Management Program: Inventories, Activities & Educational Handouts. With Whole Person Associates, he and Ester Leutenberg continue to co-write books to add to their Mental Health & Life Skills Workbook series.

Ester A. Leutenberg has worked in the mental health field for many years as a publisher, author and advocate for those suffering from loss. She personally experienced a devastating loss when her son Mitchell, after struggling with a mental illness for eight years, died by suicide in 1986. Soon after, as a way of both healing and helping others, Ester co-founded Wellness Reproductions & Publishing with her daughter Kathy Khalsa and began developing therapeutic products that help facilitators help their clients. Ester is the co-author of the SEALS series for teen-agers, Life Management Skills series for adults and Meaningful Life Skills for older adults, as well as a variety of other therapeutic card games, board games and posters. Ester has co-written GriefWork ~ Healing from Loss, The GriefWork Companion and Creating a Healthy Balanced Life. Ester and John have co-written the Mental Health & Life Skills Workbook series', the Teen Mental Health & Life Skills Workbook series, the Coping Workbook series, and the Erasing the Stigma of Mental Health Issues through Awareness series, all published by Whole Person Associates.

I am not impressed. Overly simplistic writing. It almost seems to be meant to make bitter angry people feel justified about their behavior and feelings by attaching labels "types" to people who may be annoying. I haven't spent much time going back to look at this after the first disappointing overview

A LOVING TRIBUTE TO MOM...

This book is, indeed, a tribute to the author's mother. In it, the author, a man whose mother was white and his father black, tells two stories: that of his mother and his own. Tautly written in spare, clear prose, it is a wonderful story of a bi-racial family who succeeded and achieved the American dream, despite the societal obstacles placed in its way.

The author's mother was a Polish Orthodox Jew who migrated to America at the age of two with her family during the early nineteen twenties. They ultimately settled down in Virginia, where she led an isolated and lonely life; shunned by whites because she was Jewish and shunned by blacks because she was white. She was raised in a predominantly black neighborhood, where her father, a despicable and harsh man who brutalized his handicapped wife, ran a local grocery store, where he priced gouged his black clientele.

She left home and moved to New York when she was nineteen and never looked back. She met and married the author's father, a black man, when mixed race marriages were still frowned upon by both whites and blacks. Still, she always felt more comfortable around blacks than around whites. When he died sixteen years later, she married another black man who nurtured her eight children by the author's father and proceeded to give her four more children.

The author tells of his childhood, of his family, and of the issue of race that ultimately colored his life while growing up in predominantly black neighborhoods, where his mother stood out like a sore thumb because of the color of her skin. It was always an issue his mother avoided discussing with him, as for her it was not an issue. It was not until the author wrote this book that his mother discussed the issue of race within the context of her own life. From this dialogue emerges a fascinating look at the issues of race, as well as religion, and how it impacts on an individual's identity within our race conscious society.

It is also a very personal story. While the author's family was economically disadvantaged, his eccentric and independent mother always stressed education. She was a strict disciplinarian who brooked no nonsense from her twelve children. A convert to Christianity through her first husband, with whom she founded a Baptist church, she provided her children with the will to succeed. Consequently, all twelve eventually went to college and did her proud. The story of this unique family is told from two distinct, parallel perspectives: that of the author and that of his mother. While both are interesting, it is his mother's story that dominates this beautifully written book, which is, indeed, a tribute to her. It is truly a story told from the heart, as the love that the author has for his mother is evident with every written word.

Keeping His Distance

Subtitled "A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother," this book is exactly that -- a man's account of his research into his mother's background. McBride's mother raised twelve fantastically successful children despite enormous obstacles. Unfortunately, McBride seems to value resume-type accomplishments more than ones of character. He tells us every degree earned by his brothers and sisters, but very little about them as people. What type of personalities do they have? Who are their families? What are their passions? I would have liked to have known.
McBride takes a removed stance, as if it were somebody else's family that he was assigned to report on. His background in journalism may help explain the odd distance McBride maintains.
In the end, I knew a lot about the details of his mother's life, but little of her inner existence. Perhaps this limited amount was all that McBride could tell. Perhaps all we really know about people is what they present to the outside world. Despite the altnerating points of view (McBride alternates chapters as "himself" and "his mother") McBride never climbs far enough into his mother's head to make her seem real to me.
My favorite scene: McBride's mother speaks at a church celebration/reunion. Overcome by emotion, she throws away her notes and speaks ad lib, from the heart. I wish that McBride had followed her lead when writing this book.

He pens an open letter to the Secretary of Defense recommending architectural features to include in torture chambers. He compares Baudelaire, the Parisian flaneur, to Spiderman, the Manhattan traceur. He describes the iPod-like galleries of the renovated MoMA and he recognizes the camera phone as the latest step in a process of image mobilization that began when artists stopped painting on walls and began making pictures on small pieces of wood, canvas, or paper. The endless flow of information, he makes clear, is not only more pervasive and efficient than ever, it is also generating new cultural complexities.

I couldn't put this down

This book is full of essays that seem more like musings on contemporary culture and design. The essays are written well and easy to read but still address though provoking topics and contemporary issues. I couldn't put this book down and after reading each essay was so curious what would the next one be about. It really addresses design from small to large , objects to cities, and the contemporary ideas and theories they incorporate.

I enjoyed reading this book because it was very thought provoking and especially was fun to read. Not too academic, but not dumbed down either.

Constantly Changing infostructure and still no "death of distance" news

Placing words continues the author's thesis on no such thing as death of distance. This is a good news for all space loving, teleworking, and distant cousins, in the global village.

Another good thing is, in addition to many stories and histories, this book offers a glimpse of application of data mining technique in the area of architecture and spatial design (62-64).

The weakness of the book (if this book has to be a good reading for the non-architects), is the absence of any explanation on what the title and the sub-title are supposed to be. For instance, symbols, as used in this book, relate to graphic and computer icons, rather than symbols or signs in place, space and visual domains (as in religious, secular, or others).

Further, as seen in the acknowledgements (p. 213), this book also includes auhtor's already published works, and hence it is not much of the current (the worldview as-is) and real-time (synchronous) information visualization.

About the Author
Bodily received his PhD (1976) and a masters from MIT in operations research and a BS in physics. He received the Alpha, Iota, Delta award for innovative teaching in 1982, for his work in teaching decision making with new software tools, which evolved into a text published by McGraw-Hill. His area of expertise is decision analysis. Carraway, the other main author, has a PhD from Purdue (1984) in management, an MBA and a BS in math from East Carolina. Pfeifer has a PhD from Georgia Tech (1979)and two Masters in operations research and applied statistics. His widely published work is primarily in regression and forecasting. Frey is the co-author of our dated Vatter et. al., Harvard casebook, Quantitative Methods in Management. He has taught at Harvard for five years after receiving his PhD from Johns Hopkins University (1969) in operations research. He has written a wealth of cases and teaching notes in OR and finance. All of the authors teach the introductory MBA two-course sequence from which this text has been developed. The course is consistently ranked highly by students.

An excellent textbook

The authors apply mathematical theories to build business models in very simple statements. In this way, we understand how to make decisions based on the models described in this book. The authors also reveal how to use Microsoft Excel to solve business models. I think this is very crucial skill for the managers.
