For those who want a textbook, this is the best I've encountered so far.

This is the fourth book I have tried in my quest to learn and improve my Spanish language skills. It is BY FAR the best one. The "work units" are long enough to really practice the vocabulary introduced. Having the answers in the back of the book enabled me to check myself after completing the exercises in a chapter; no waiting for someone else or searching the web. The texts at the beginning of each "work unit" are long enough to provide similarity to dialogues in real world scenarios AND long enough to read aloud and hear more than just an out-of-context sentence.
So far the only thing I've missed is hearing a native speaker read the text at the beginning of the "work unit"; I think that would help.
I'm old enough to appreciate having a text book in hand to help me learn and especially help me to review what I've learned.

Good beginning book

This is used by my local community college for its Spanish non-credit courses. The book is easy to follow and has answers in the back for most of the exercises so you can check your work. I also like that there are some illustrations in it so it's not just boring text. There may not be too much depth in it, but after all it is a beginning book and works just fine for someone who has had no Spanish at all.

Apocalyptic Werewolves!

Another fantastic story about the 'weres' of Los Angeles. This story picks up right where the cliffhanger in book 1 ended, and it's an exciting, action pack ride right up to the end of book 2. The thing I really liked about this book was it goes into a lot of the back-story about the origins of the virus. There are also several cool new characters with fascinating stories all their own, and we finally get to learn what happened to Lucy's police partner Gabe after he turned into a were-beast. I love the progression of the various relationships in the story -- the friendship of Lucy and Xhochi, their uneasy alliance with the Xhochi's military pals, the wacky prison-psychologist Imogen and her strange daughter, and the brilliant beast/hound/feral boy Kai. Can't wait to see what happens next.

Absolutely fantastic book. I couldn't put it down. It hooks you from the beginning and keeps you thinking after the final page. Loved the brilliantly drawn characters, particularly the werewolf whisperer Lucy and her friend and partner Xochitl - two fantastically written strong female characters. The book has it all, action, adventure, mystery and, at times, a wicked humor. It's fast paced and wonderfully written, both compelling and entertaining.

The characters are well developed and believable. The story line is rich and complex. Most important, the authors are literate and thoughtful. I'm looking forward to the next in the series.

About the Author
Norman Lewis was an author, grammarian, lexicographer, and etymologist. Lewis was a leading authority on English-language skills, whose bestselling 30 Days to a More Powerful Vocabulary published by Pocket Books in�1971 promised to teach readers to improve their skills in fifteen minutes a day. He started his teaching career at New York University and the City College of New York. From 1964 to 1995, he taught English—including grammar, etymology, and vocabulary—at Rio Hondo College, a two-year community college in Whittier, California. Your boss has a bigger vocabulary than you have.

That's one good reason why he's your boss.

This discovery has been made in the word laboratories of the world Not by theoretical English professors, but by practical, hard-headed scientists who have been searching for the secrets of success.

After a host of experiments and years of testing they have found out:

That if your vocabulary is limited your chances of success are limited.

That one of the easiest and quickest ways to get ahead is by consciously building up your knowledge of words.

That the vocabulary of the average person almost stops growing by the middle twenties.

And that from then on it is necessary to have an intelligent plan if progress is to be made. No hit-or-miss methods will do.

It has long since been satisfactorily established that a high executive does not have a large vocabulary merely because of the opportunities of his position. That would be putting the cart before the horse. Quite the reverse is true. His skill in words was a tremendous help in getting him his job.

Dr. Johnson O'Connor of the Human Engineering Laboratory of Boston and of the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey, gave a vocabulary test to one hundred young men who were studying to be industrial executives.

Five years later, all, without exception, of those who had passed in the upper 10 per cent had executive positions, while not a single young man of the lower 25 per cent had become an executive.

Some of the factors that lead to success can be measured as scientifically as the contents of a test tube, and it has been discovered that the one and only common characteristic of outstandingly successful people is "an extensive knowledge of the exact meaning of English words."

Vocabulary is one indication of intelligence. Learning power measurably sharpens when vocabulary increases. Here's the proof.

Two classes in a high school were selected for an experiment The ages and background of the members of both groups were the same, and each group represented a similar cross-section of the community. Otoe, the control class, took the normal courses. The other class had, in addition, special and rigorous vocabulary training. At the end of the period the grades of the students in the vocabulary class surpassed the grades of the members of the control group, not only in English, but in every other subject, including mathematics and the sciences.

Similarly, Professor Lewis M. Terman of Stanford University has found that a vocabulary test is as accurate a measure of intelligence as any three units of the standard and accepted Stanford-Binet I. Q. tests.

Words are the tools of thinking. It naturally follows, then, that the more words you have at your command, the clearer and more accurate your thinking will be.

Words are your medium of exchange, the coin with which you do business with all those around you. With words you relate to people, communicate your feelings and thoughts to them, influence them, persuade them, control them. In short, through words you shape your own destiny. For your words are your personality; your vocabulary is you.

Words are explosive. Phrases are packed with TNT. A single word can destroy a friendship, can start or end a marital battle, can land a large order. The right phrases in the mouths of clerks have quadrupled the sales of a department store. The wrong words used by a campaign orator have lost an election. Four unfortunate words -- "Rum, Romanism, and Rebellion" -- used in a Republican campaign speech threw the Catholic vote and the Presidential victory to Grover Cleveland.

Armies fight for phrases: "Make the world safe for Democracy"; "V for Victory"; "Remember Pearl Harbor."

Words have changed the direction of history. Words can also change the direction of your life. They can raise a man from mediocrity to success.

Misleading title

While you can certainly finish the book in 30 days, you'll most likely forget the vocabularies in at least half of the chapters by the time you are done. The quiz in each chapter is useful. The diagnostic test at the beginning of the book can crush your self-esteem - which is to be redeemed after reading the book. "30 days" in the title is misleading, because readers probably need to go through the chapters again and again to make sure they truly remember the words. So make it "45-50 days to a more powerful vocabulary"!
Furthermore, believe it or not: it is not a bad cram book if you have less than 3 months to study for SAT or GRE! I find vocabulary builders (such as this title) much better study tools for SAT or GRE than conventional exam preparation guides like Princeton Review or Barron's - at least for the verbal section.

Excellent aid to a more powerful vocabulary

On the back cover there is the promise that the book will "make words your slaves". Well, not quite but with perseverance, you are destined to achieve at least 50% of the intended result. You need 30 days of persistent study and more days for reinforcement. A bonus is that by the end of the book you would probably be inspired to acquire a lifetime habit of increasing your vocabulary.
Those who find this book useful should also consider the brilliant "Word Power Made Easy" by Norman Lewis, one of the co-authors of this book.

A Great Little Book

If you've made it this far you know who Orage is. He has over 200 exercises in the first section and 16 short essay in the second section.
The exercises are mainly for work on the intellectual centre but with different emphasises on Memory, Imagination and Thinking. For example Number 13 on page 44 "While visualising some verse, write down a regular set of number. Reverse." The exercises start off relatively simple and become progressively difficult.
There are a few emotional and motor centre exercises, however these seem to be in the minority.

How not to be Bored
On Dying Daily
The last listed essay includes a particularly difficult exercise to grasp which sounds quite easy. Orage assures the reader he or she shall become more skilled with practice.

Outstanding book for introducing your child to chess!

I have an 8 year old son who has always wanted to play chess, but has been a little intimidate by the complexity of the game. A kind librarian at our local public library saw my son carrying around my copy of the "Idiot's Guide to Chess" and thought he could use a more age-appropriate book.
He has enjoyed "Start Playing Chess" so much, I have had to buy him his own copy. It is an excellent book; there are large diagrams with easy-to-understand explanations and illustrations on the moves and the rules. I can honestly say that because of this book, my son has rapidly caught on to the game, and is now looking at his move in terms of strategy, as opposed to playing chess like you would checkers.
A very enjoyable, well written book that will help any child learn this wonderful game.

I was looking for a way to introduce my 7 year old son to the rules and movements of chess. We used this book over the course of a weekend and were able to get him into more thoughtful play.

In Kierkegaard's words, the poet's sphere is not the universal, or general, but the religious, or individual, sphere - faith, not the concept; self-confidence, not conformity to any over-simplified logic. Graves' stance is paradoxical throughout: he was not politically involved (except immediately after the war when he said he was a Socialist), but evinced some political ideas in his essays. He was not religious, but poetry took the place of religion for him. He evinced a very original poetic outlook, but kept within the limits of well-accepted prosody. He liked to provoke his audience, but his poetry is never provocative. In other words, it is not easy to situate Graves according to time-honoured categories. He is too much of an individual poet to stand general classification. Yet his poems have a direct appeal to the reading public. He is a poet of unrest. This volume is of interest for scholars and poetry readers who wish to renew their appreciation of poetry and go beyond nowadays critical standards through a careful reading of the very powerful thought of a major poet.

I’ve become a big fan of Christina Tetreault over the last few years. When I discovered the opportunity to purchase the audio version for $1.99, I immediately took advantage of it. This is Book 5 in her The Sherbrookes of Newport series, and it’s the best one I have read so far!

Trent Sherbrooke is the typical playboy, never having any type of relationship other than sexual with any women. While his initial plans to go along with his campaign manager’s suggestion to find a suitable wife, sounded like a good option to help repair his damaged image, he does not believe Addison would be the right woman. He thinks he needs a woman who is well aware that it will be strictly a business arrangement, mutually beneficial for both of them.

When a picture shows up in the tabloids, and his manager tells him she is exactly what he needs, he balks, but eventually goes along. He soon realizes that Addison is a woman of substance, and he no longer wants just a marriage of convenience. He wants the real deal.

Can what started out as a means to an end, turn into a forever kind of love, or will Addison run if she finds out how their romance originally started?

Redeeming a Billionaire is a fast-paced, easy reading experience. Ms. Tetreault’s writing style is smooth and flowing, making this an engaging story. The plot is believable and the characters are great.

Addison is an endearing heroine, and I became fully vested in her character from the start. It was hard to trust Trent since he had such a bad reputation as a “love ’em and leave ’em” kind of guy, but she still manages to open her heart to him and believe he can fall in love with her.

At first, I was not sure I would like Trent. His reasoning for going along with his manager’s suggestion is underhanded and does not show him in a favorable light. As the romance unfolds, his quick turn around involving his feelings for Addison, went a long way in getting me to fall in love with his character. By the end of the book, I was rooting for him to win Addison’s devotion.

The sensuality of Redeeming a Billionaire is a step up from what is normally there in Ms. Tetreault’s books, and definitely,​ fit this story. The chemistry between Trent and Addison is combustible, and I thoroughly enjoyed their love affair.

I listened to the audio version performed by Piper Goodeve and really enjoyed her narrative. She reads with just the right amount of emotion and gives the characters distinct voices. I will be looking for other books narrated by Ms. Goodeve.

If you like a light-hearted love story with good depth of character and a great plot, then you will love Redeeming a Billionaire as much as I did. Although this book is part of a series, it is a stand-alone. Happy reading!

Cinderella story.

This is a good story.
Trent is going to run for a Senate seat. His advisor thinks he needs to find a wife and get married to get rid of his playboy appearance.
He runs into Addie,literally, She acts like she doesn't know or recognize him. That intrigues him.
Addie knows about Trent and his family.
Trent & Addie run into each other again and they start talking to get to know each other. Feelings start to change and Trent's advisor thinks Addie is the one to help Trent's reputation.
Trent has other ideas and then Addie finds out what Trent and his advisor is up too and she leaves him. Now it's up to Trent to fix it.
Good ending but wish there was more to the stories ending.

Politics, billions of dollars, family, love, desire, determination, honesty, integrity…put all of these together and you have a delightful Romance between Trent Sherbrooke, of the Sherbrookes of Newport, and Addison, i.e. Addy, of the Ambrosia Pastry and Caf� Shop family. Their meeting and romance developed from a normal life event, and when either of them most expected to find their true love. The story made me smile, laugh, become concerned and annoyed at a male- see all normal feelings!! You will be able to see yourself as Addy and you will love Trent. This book left me smiling.
