Excellent Companion

We had multiple rotations while in school. A lot of the time there was little to know warning what all went on in each modality. "Oh my goodness! I'm so nervous. What do they even DO in the Cath Lab????" Comments like that will be eased with this book. There are short concise overviews of things that go on in special modalities. Very helpful.

Though much of the book stands as a record of American post-war prosperity and its accompanying problems, the revised edition also takes into account recent social and economic changes. A new preface and a foreword by economist Robert Frank introduce some of the issues created by those changes and two revised chapters develop them, discussing among others the assimilation of counter-cultural ideas throughout American society, especially ideas concerning quality of life. Scitovsky draws fascinating connections between the new elite of college-educated consumers and the emergence of a growing underclass plagued by drugs and violence, perceptively tracing the reactions of these disparate groups to the problems of leisure and boredom.

This is a great little book and even though it was written decades ago, nearly everything within it remains relevant and applicable today. It's a real gem and too bad more people don't know about it. I highly recommend reading it.

Excessive Stimulation or Excessive Comfort?

This bifurcated question lies at the core of this excellent classic. The assumption that all choice is rational, that rationality choses freedom apriori, and freedom is its own intrinsic good has been the foundation of contemporary economics and liberal political theory for more than a century? This book challenges this and other assumptions, demonstrating that the true human "need" is not for freedom in itself, but instrumentally, so that our choices to bring about the right mixture of stimulation in our lives is balanced by an appropriate dose of comfort. Too much stimulation produces pain, too much comfort produces boredom, the excess of which lies outside the "mean."
This book goes beyond challenging our most basic presumptions; it argues coherently, cohesively, and cogently that the summa bonum of human life is not merely choice, but the right choices that balance our conflicting desires for something "new" with our desire for "stability." Most theories gravitate toward one extreme or the other; Scitovsky demonstrates the Aristotlean "mean."
Sadly, this book is only available in hardback at and is very pricey. Not that this book isn't worth the high cost Oxford Press demands, rather that it will unfortunately limit widespread access to this treasure. The puritan economy

This book is must for all people who want to challenge the current free market dogma. Scitovsky shows that economic practices are aspects of one's culture: people in different countries spend their money very differently. These spending patterns are not based on the amount of income but on what is important to them. Thus Europeans with less income than Americans spend more of their income on fresh fruit and other foods, as well as on entertainent. Americans may buy bigger, but Europeans buy better. An Americam will boast about how much something cost, while a European will boast about how much they saved.
By showing that economics is based on culture, the whole concept of economics as a value free science gets undermined.
And, the book is readable for the non professional.

In this book a new and distinctive approach to the science-religion debate emerges from a synthesis of the Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition with phenomenological thought. Developing ideas of Greek Patristics the author treats faith, with its sense of the Divine presence, and knowledge of the universe, as two modes of communion which constitute the human condition. The modern opposition between science and theology (which is historically paralleled with the Church’s split between East and West, and monasticism and Christianity in the world), is treated as the split between two intentionalities of the overall human subjectivity. The human person, as a centre of their reconciliation, becomes the major theme of the dialogue between science and theology. It is argued that the reconciliation of science and theology is not simply an academic exercise; it requires an existential change, a change of mind (metanoia), which cannot be effected without ecclesial involvement. Then the person who effectuates the mediation between science and theology is raised to the level of “cosmic priesthood” while the mediation acquires the features of a “cosmic Eucharist” in which all divisions and tensions in creation and humanity are removed.� It is through this existential change accompanied by phenomenological analysis that scientific theories can be subjected to a certain “vision” through which the hidden ultimate goal (telos) of scientific research (as the explication of the human condition) shows its kinship to the saving telos advocated by Christian faith. The opposition between theology and science is thus being para-eucharistically overcome.

Excellent - 5 Stars

Pedigree is a thought provoking case study into hiring practices of what the author terms Elite Professional Services firms (EPS). From the viewpoint of someone interested in inequality, Rivera explains how choices in target campuses, interview structure (fit, polish), and choice to use revenue-generating staff to interview (vs HR) stack the deck against non traditional candidates. Alternatively, for a jobseeker, Pedigree is an amazing insight because it informs about systemic biases and specific techniques to overcome them. Despite having prepared extensively for a summer internship interview at an EPS, this guide provided much deeper understanding about the interview evaluation and hiring committee process. Finally, I was impressed with the quality of the research methodology (hands-on research, inductive coding, accounting for author's own background). I highly recommend Pedigree for people interested in equitable and effective hiring practices and MBA/law school students seeking EPS jobs.

Nothing new, but an interesting read!

I'm not sure what to make of "Pedigree"'s marketing campaign. The book certainly has received a lot of hype, most provocatively in the Economist (headline: "How to join the 1%"). I'm baffled, however, that Amazon is promoting "Pedigree" as "vocational guidance."

"Pedigree" is not a "how-to" guide for joining elite firms. (Again, I'm not exactly sure why it's being promoted as such.) Rather, the book is an easy-to-read text that details/gives an overview of Rivera's research on hiring practices at a few investment banking, consulting and law firms. The insight the book offers is certainly not new for anyone familiar with these industries, but Rivera (heavily influenced by Bourdieu) offers a succinct, beautifully written sociological analysis of a world that is foreign to many -- and one that has not received much attention from academics.

I found the book a pleasure to read, though I found Rivera's analysis slightly repetitive and her presentation of nontraditional candidates who succeeded in accepting offers (chapter 10) lacking. I do look forward, however, to following her work in the future, and I am impressed by her life story (from a single-parent home in L.A. to Yale to Northwestern's Kellogg). Overall, this is a great read for scholars/professionals/laypeople who are interested in exploring the state of our "meritocracy" and are excited by the growing publication of "popular" books about American educational inequality ("Our Kids;" "Privilege;" etc).

Sheds new light on the gatekeepers of the 1%

A thought-provoking, well-researched analysis of the entry-level hiring process at the most elite employers in finance, law and business consulting -- one might even call them "the gatekeepers of the 1%." My husband and I are both part of the world described here (he in consulting and me in law), as we both managed to gate-crash our way in from non-elite family backgrounds. Having done our share of hiring committee work, we can vouch for a lot of the picture painted here.* However, the book's value derives not from the care taken in accurately describing the hiring process, but from the new light the author throws on the subject, even for those already familiar with this world.

Rivera has done society a service by illuminating the unspoken norms against which all applicants to these top employers are judged. These norms, like the need to show participation in a team sport (or similar significant time commitment in a familiar group activity), or the ability to seize and hold the floor in a conversation about serious subjects, are unremarkable features of upper class life. However, they are not the natural outcomes of being raised in a poor family, and outside of attending a boarding school on a scholarship, there is nowhere you can go to learn them. So, although none of these norms overtly discriminate against applicants who are not rich, white Anglo-Saxons (though there are incidents of blatantly illegal discriminatory acts in the book too), their net effect is to largely screen out people whose lives do not resemble those of the wealthy. The book is worth reading in order to see this process in action, or for would-be applicants, even to structure your college years and take other non-obvious steps in preparation.

*In terms of the particulars, in my experience, the picture for applicants from non-elite law schools is not as dire as described here. At both of the white-shoe firms where I worked, new associates were from a range of law schools in the top 50, plus local ones (though you still had to be in the top of your class outside of the elite schools). Of course, this was in Atlanta, not in NYC, so it is possible that the top dog firms in NYC only look at a few law schools.

In "The Ancient Egyptian Culture Revealed" Moustafa Gadalla relates many hitherto obscure aspects of a 36,000-year-old Egyptian civilization including their societal/political system as the source of Greek philosophy as exemplified by Plato's 'Ideal Republic and Laws', as well as Hellenic knowledge and practices with respect to medicine, music, science, manufacturing, industries, trade policies, and so much more that has been recognized by traditional scholarship. Additionally readers will be introduced to the simplicity, coherence and beauty of the religion of Ancient Egypt; and their ability to determine the sex of an unborn child; their population migration, settlements and influences throughout the ancient world. Highly recommended to the attention of students in Egyptology, Christianity, Metaphysics, and Archaeology.

It was a book I could not put down. IT is very sophisticated intellectually ,philosophically, and spiritually. It presents ancient Egypt and its culture in a historically astute profound way. IF you like to read books along this vein then this book would be a good starting point.

Excellent research

Gadalla, as always in all his books, provides thorough, and factual details about the "origins" of the many aspects of Egyptian peoples and their civilization. Having said that, because many have not been priviledged to have read many of his writings, I think that he should highlight in every book, as he did in "Exiled Egyptians", who the people in that early epoch of Egypt (Kmt) were.

Most people don't realize these were "Black Africans", at this time period in Egyptian history as proven by their own statements of their origins, linguistics, archaeology, paeleontology, iconography, etc. Since this is still today not being taught throughout the world in the educational systems due to ignorance and racisim, it should be constantly empasized by those who "know". This is the true meaning of "Maat", to do, say, and be, what is right and just in the world.

Great Book About Unplugging From The Collective Consciousness Of Fear, Lack, And Suffering

This book is an easy and interesting read, and I would definitely recommend it for anyone who is doing the activations, or who is considering doing them and would like to learn more about this amazing modality and about the collective consciousness.

The first part of the book is about some of Tamra's life experiences and how she came to receive the activations. The second part consists of transcribed conversations between her and a friend. They discuss various life issues, spiritual topics, and Tamra gives examples of how the activations have transformed people she knows. The third part is a transcript of the practitioner training, through which you learn about the foundational activations. Also included is a link to a video, which allows you to receive the golden seals to give yourself the foundational activations.

One thing I really liked about this book is that there is a lot of wisdom and information--and it's relatable to real life experiences. You learn how to unplug from the collective consciousness of pain, fear, suffering, etc., and connect to the consciousness of unconditional love and abundance.

A side note: I met Tamra earlier this year while on a tour of Egypt. I had never heard of her or her modality before. I ended up sitting next to her on a domestic flight and began to feel this incredibly strong energy. My entire body vibrated, pulsed, and tingled, and within a few minutes I experienced the most wonderful feeling of relaxation and peace. Initially, I was bewildered about the source of this energy, but knew it had to be coming through someone on the plane. When I discovered it was coming from Tamra, I was intrigued and got to know her during the rest of the tour. She is truly a lovely person--compassionate, generous, kind, and has a great sense of humor and wit.

Upon returning home, I began doing the activations, and they are absolutely extraordinary! At this point, I've done the foundational ones and a few others (so have a long ways to go before I've completed them all), and I'm AMAZED at how powerful they are and how quickly they are shifting me. Already, I feel more compassionate and less judgmental of other people. The volume on my fears and negative emotions has been turned down, and the happiness and optimism has been turned up. I'm super excited about continuing with the activations and experiencing transformation. If I could go back in time and give my younger self one thing, it would be these activations. They are a huge blessing.

An inspirational book

Firstly, the concept of Sacred Activations itself is a great. One gets the activations just by listening to Tamra that too just in 4-5 minutes. I have experienced these activations through recordings and they are really great..
In the book, Tamra has given the background details and circumstances as to how the activations occurred. She tells her personal story too which itself is inspiring. The unusual format of the book (in the form of interview) also make it very simple and to the point.

This book is written in a very relaxed, interview type style that is SO Tamra! LOL thats why I Love her and her Activations. No fluff just plenty of Amazing stuff! Considering each activation runs about $35. this is a Fantastic value since it lets you do the first 26 Activations on yourself! Another reason I Love Tamra, she wants this work to be available to everyone! Love Sacred Activations, Thanks for bringing them forward Tamra!

Lots of good information/explanations

Provided a good explanation of what had been confusing for me about how different systems wrap code. For example, a file system "wrapping" the SCSI commands for reading/writing mass storage which in turn are wrapped in USB package wrappers for transmission and execution through USB link. Why some mass storage systems do (Flash Drive) or do not (SD drive) need USB wrappers.

Best book I have read which brings it all together.

A good start

Its a good start for someone like me who does not know nothing about Usb Mass Storage.
But if someone expects a full and complete index about everything related, well its not exactly that.
Don't think i'm underrating this book, in fact it is the best i have read.
But it covers the essential, it is not a full and in depth guide for every Usb Mass Storage scenario.
But is very didactic and concise, plus i am glad to have bought it!
