FIVE LECTURES THAT GIVE AN EXCELLENT OVERVIEW OF JUNG

This book contains five lectures (recorded nearly verbatim) that Jung gave in 1935 to the Institute of Medical Psychology in London. Each lecture concludes with questions and answers ("Discussions") from the 200 doctors who were present.

Here are some representative quotations from the book:

"These collective patterns I have called archetypes, using an expression of St. Augustine's... From these layers derive the contents of an impersonal, mythological character, in other words, the archetypes, and I call them therefore the impersonal or collective unconscious." (Lect. 2)
"There is nothing mystical about the collective unconscious. It is just a new branch of science, and it is really commonsense to admit the existence of unconscious collective processes. For, though a child is not born conscious, his mind is not a tabula rasa." (Lect. 2)
"I must repeat again that my methods do not discover theories, they discover facts, and I tell you what facts I discover with these methods. I cannot discover a castration complex or a repressed incest or something like that---I find only psychological facts, not theories." (Disc. 2)
"Tao can be anything. I use another word to designate it, but it is poor enough. I call it synchronicity." (Disc. 2)
"Mystics are people who have a particularly vivid experience of the processes of the collective unconscious. Mystical experience is experience of archetypes." (Disc. 3)
"It is my personal psychology, my prejudice that I see psychological facts as I do. I admit that I see things in such and such a way. But I expect Freud and Adler to do the same and confess that their ideas are their subjective point of view." (Disc. 4)

The Essential Jung

This book is ideal for those new to Jung's work. The lectures are Jung at his simplest and clearest. Other writings by Jung are written in a style that is long and winding, circling the topic again and again. The new reader can easily get lost. There is no such problem here.

What is more the wide breadth of the core of Jung's work is covered. We read:

an introduction to Jungian character types,

a brief summary of archetypes,

a brief summary of the multi-layered psyche,

a long discussion of the word association test,

an introduction to Jungian interpretation of dreams,

a detailed discussion of a specific example of the archetypal,

a discussion of a dream sequence, and,

a summary of the active imagination.

In these new days of cognitive psychology I thought I had years ago 'moved passed' Jungian psychology, but I found I read this book avidly and had my interest rekindled. There is something intriguing about man's depths. All out problems may not be caused by our unconscious, as was once thought, but our unconscious is a part of us and seems to give relevant comments on our lives.

About the Author
Michael Fickess is devoted to calling believers to a pursue a deeper and more intimate relationship with God through authentic community, effective prayer, a revelational knowledge of Scripture, and a hunger to explore the "deep things" of God.  He earned a Master's degree in Middle Eastern History after developing a heart for the Middle East during his tour of duty as an Infantry soldier in Baghdad.

He is currently serving as a teacher at Comenius School for Creative Leadership, Morningstar's K-12 school.  He also serves on Morningstar Fellowship's intercession and has previously served on Morningstar's "Advancing Arts" team.  Michael and his wife, Rachelle, live in Charlotte, North Carolina, and have two children, Samuel and Ari.

Michael and his family also have a passion for gardening and homesteading because this simple lifestyle allows them to spend more time together as a family, enjoy nature, and live a more self-sufficient lifestyle in turbulent times.

My Favorite Version

This is a modern paraphrase of the Book of Enoch or I Enoch. It's origin is Ethiopian rather than Slavonic.
In the Introduction Mr. Fickess is humble while explaining his work on this book.

There are a couple of things I appreciate in this book.
First, the footnotes are great! There are multiple passages that have a strong similarity to Scripture passages. More than I thought.
Some of the footnotes clarify meaning or add an alternative to consider.

The other thing I appreciate is the modern language used. This book just reads so much smoother and is easy to understand.

If you buy one version of the book of Enoch this would be the one I recommend.

The message in Enoch's Blessing is not to be taken lightly. Those truly desiring to go all the way with the Lord in this realm, are encouraged to not only read it, but to embrace it, and digest it. As for me...I'm allowing it to unfold portion by portion. My daily portion of revelation is as the Lord serves me. Let Him bring you into the knowledge of His truth... in His time and in His way.
Thank you, Mike, for your labor. It will not be in vain. Generations will awaken to the truth, and your book will be one of the resources we will see in the library of Heaven. AMEN!!

The author does a great job of listing the references and I have included ...

I am just blown away by this book. I attend Morningstar Ministries and I knew this book was sold there, but stayed away from it for a couple of years because of some concerns I had regarding "extra-biblical" revelation. After doing some research, I found that the Book of Enoch was regarded by the ancient Jews. I'll spare you the history lesson. I'm on chapter 17 and I have yet to find any contradiction of scripture. What I have found are verses after verses mentioned in our bible. It's really incredible. The author does a great job of listing the references and I have included my own when going through the book. I can't believe the "tongues of fire" was missed in Chapter 14 (see book of Acts). Nowhere else in our bibles is there a reference to tongues of fire (except stammering tongues of Isaiah, but not FIRE!) Reading this book feels so overwhelming in a good way. You feel like blinders have come off and you can see more clearly. The why's and how's become more clear concerning our origin and the pre-flood activities and just how hell bent on destruction demons are (and the why behind their hatred). I'll be reading and re-reading this book in the days ahead since it was written for those living in our time. I can't say enough about this book except to buy it, pray about it, and just be prepared to blown away in the Spirit. The bible says that we will prosper if we listen to His prophets and the New Testament clearly calls Enoch a prophet. Read it and be blessed! My only downfall is finding someone to share it with (other than my mother who is on the same page as me spiritually). I'm nervous about sharing it with others because I know how reluctant I was to even read it myself. I'm sure the Lord of Spirits will show me!

This has been the focus of a seven-year research project funded by the British Academy, the British Academy Centenary Research Project (otherwise known as the Lucy Project).

The main aim of the Lucy Project has been to explore these two axes in an integrated set of studies whose focus was to link archaeology and, in its broadest sense, evolutionary psychology, which offers powerful, new explanatory insights. This approach redresses the past contribution from archaeology towards the study of evolutionary issues and ties evolutionary psychology into the extensive historical data from the past, allowing us to escape the confined timeframe of the comparatively recent human mind.

In this volume of published an unpublished papers, the contributors explore the question of just what it is that makes us so different, and why and when these uniquely human capacities evolved.

About the Author

Robin Dunbar is Professor of Evolutionary Psychology at the University of Oxford, and a Fellow of Magdalen College. His principal research interests focus on the evolution of sociality (with particular reference to primates and humans). He is best known for the social brain hypothesis, the gossip theory of language evolution, and Dunbar's Number (the limit on the number of relationships that we can manage).

Clive Gamble is Professor of Archaeology at the University of Southampton.

John Gowlett is Professor of Palaeolithic Archaeology at the University of Liverpool.

Ok, you slugged it through design school where you learned about typefaces like serif, sans serif, ornamental...the works. While you now know the difference between Bauhaus and Arial, you still don't know how to design a typeface. Designing Type can rescue you, especially if you need to design a typeface in a hurry for a client who demands something to go with his product line...

Author Karen Cheng, associate professor at the University of Washington's Visual Communication Design Program in Seattle, teaches type design and typography. The lessons that she includes in her book are so simple that you can understand the type designer's process almost overnight. Cheng states, "There is no single, `correct' process for creating a typeface. The methodologies of individual designers are as unique and varied as the designs themselves."

From this starting point, Cheng proceeds to explain how a typeface is developed, and then provides examples and diagrams that demonstrate visual principles, type construction, and optical illusions that affect typeface uniformity. She creates a step-by-step process through letters, numbers, and punctuation and accents, all developed through a variety of methods from sketching to vector graphics.

While Cheng does include history of type and foundries in her narratives, the emphasis is on type development. The only problem that you might face is that Cheng focuses only on serif and sans serif faces, and these choices are generic. For the price, this book is worth its weight in gold for anyone who wants to learn more about how type works as a stand-alone design or as a design element within a larger format. Highly recommended for students and for the working designer.

A Classic Text on Type Design

Absolutely a must have for aspiring and junior typeface or logo designers. However, the book is not an easy read; it should be read cover to cover with patience before being used as a workbook reference. Its text requires a sound prior knowledge of typography and related technologies. And it must be read in tandem with close observation of the numerous illustrations and diagrams to be fully understood and appreciated. The information shared by the author is not available elsewhere unless one attends graduate school in type design or apprentices to a type designer. I had completed my first roman & small cap font before I acquired this book and hadn't started my companion italic yet. And though the author doesn't cover italic type design her thoroughness in her analytical and comparative approach is such that I have the book open like a workbook for every italic character and am redrawing some of my romans. I've been teaching graphic design for 30 years and though so much has changed the fundamental and essential have not though they have evolved. This book will become a classic for serious professionals because of the level of insight that it gives into the essentials of type design.

Visual construction of letters...

This book is indispensible for anyone who designs type. Clear illustrations show the visual construction of letters. For instance, on pages 100-101, an outline of the letter "v" placed directly over a shaded "y" in nine serif typeface examples make it clear that the "y" is not just a "v" with a descending tail. Is the sans serif "u" just an upside-down "n"? Pages 146-147 show with several examples that it's not quite that simple. Many visual details on every letter (including numbers and diacritical marks etc...) will help fine tune your type designs no matter your level of expertise. An extremely useful section is the simplified guidelines on designing sidebearings of letters. You will not regret adding this book to your typographic library.

Nicholas Professor Of Management Science Loyola University-Chicago Nicholas received his PhD in Industrial Engineering from Northwestern University and has a BS in Aeronautical Engineering and an MBA in Systems Analysis from the University of Illinois. He is author of "Managing Business and Engineering Projects", a Prentice Hall text. Nicholas has taught for 18 years at Loyola, at the undergraduate and MBA level and has worked in or consulted with many companies, of note-Continental Illinois Bank, Price Waterhouse, ITT, and Lockheed Aircraft.

This book is a step by step guide of the japanese system of production. Subjects that are very obscure in other books are depicted with remarkable simplicity. This is a good textbook for an international competitive manufacturing class.

Lean: An earlier book that tells it better

I don't know how the lean community could have missed this excellent book. Maybe it's because the word lean is "hidden" in the subtitle. But the bulk of the book is a comprehensive and right-on-target discussion of lean's most essential features. Part II (273 pp.) thoroughly and intelligently presents lean's fundamentals in six chapters: Small-lot production; Setup-time reduction; Maintaining and improving equipment; Pull production systems; Focused factories and group technology; Work cells and cellular manufacturing; and Standard operations. (This is unlike so many other lean books that focus more on things like how to study, organize, and prepare for lean than on lean's methods of actually changing processes to improve competitive customer response.)
Besides those "lean core" chapters, the author has included chapters on how the accounting systems must change--so that conventional performance measures support rather than thwart the lean agenda. This book should be widely used in classrooms of business schools and industrial engineering departments--and should serve as a key source of lean training in manufacturing companies.

Cheap Binding!

The content of the book is fine. Clear and concise. However, I just had the book over a few days and the binding split in the middle and has started to come loose. I purchased the book new. My book is no exception-all of my fellow nursing students that purchased this book-new also-have had the same issue. We use this book frequently and some paid a lot for their book and it is frustrating to have a book fall apart during its first week of reading.

Poor quality binding

This was the only "new" book I purchased for school and the binding was terrible! there are 4 chapters that were inserted too low in the binding process, so I have serrated edging on the top of the short page and material that is important cut off at the bottom of the pages! I needed this book for school, so I didn't return it. It is such poor quality, I won't be able to resell it for sure!

Too bad! I am happy with other products from evolve and their website is very helpful and user friendly, but this purchase was disappointing!... Next time, I'll go for used.

An honest account from an honest man.

“Cometh the hour, cometh the man” is an adage that was penned for men such as General H. Norman Schwarzkopf.

It is very easy for Englishman to prefer British heroes over those from other countries. Some might say it is even easier for United States citizens to acknowledge the achievements of their own citizens whilst deprecating those of any other nation. Eisenhower, for example, was a great man - but so was Montgomery!

This book, however, is about a man who is not in open comparison to any. He tells an account of his own life which, as others have already stated, is so honest as to be brutally so. How odd that the fickle finger of fate is able to steer any man towards his ultimate destiny. What if Eisenhower (or even Montgomery) had joined the Navy?, what if Norman Schwarzkopf had railed against his father’s wishes and “not” joined the US Army?

But they did and I am unable to avoid that clich� which demands that “the rest is history.” Having said that, I would suggest General Schwarzkopf’s contribution to that history is as great as any man’s.

Other reviewers have sought to express their views in their own ways and quite rightly so! Some of those reviews give the reader a quick impression – “it’s a great book” and all that, whereas others seek to paraphrase the book and, is so doing give the reader a better impression of what is found within it’s pages.

Me, well, for the very first time in a long time, I feel as though I have read a book. Just think about that. As a respected writer and recognized educator, Roberta C. Weiss, LVN, Ed.D. has been involved in educating and equipping future and current professional for more than 30 years. She has specialized in the development of allied health and nursing courses for the Career College market and has worked with Pearson since 1990. In addition, Ms. Weiss has served as the Corporate Allied Health Program Manager for Corinthian Colleges, where she was responsible for overseeing, managing and developing all allied health programs. Ms. Weiss holds double bachelor's degrees in Journalism and Education, a Master's Degree in Educational Administration, and has been a licensed nurse since 1979.

Love it! This is a great workbook for a beginner in the field of Physical Therapy. It provides great descriptions and photos to explain various rehab techniques. I like the fact that the workbook gives you space to write things down - that save times and doesn't require you to have a bunch of 'sticky notes' in your workbook. Thanks again for a great resource.

This book has so many flaws. First, it may be the only book out there for PT Aide. So everyone has to purchase it. Editing is terrible,many mistakes all around the book. Very expensive ($150.00 new) but isn't worth more than $30.
